Barrel Chest Suit: Fit Notes a Tailor Shop Sends So the Fronts Close Cleanly

Quick answer: A barrel chest is deep from front to back and rounded, so a standard jacket runs out of length and room over the chest, and the fronts swing apart below the button while the lapels stand away from the body. Send the chest and over-chest measurements, the front and back lengths, and side and front photos of the client standing naturally, with a fit note that names the chest shape, so the pattern adds front length and chest room. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the measurements and side photos on WhatsApp.

Some clients have a chest that is deep rather than wide. Seen from the side, the ribcage is rounded and the chest stands forward; seen from the front, the client may not look large at all. A jacket cut from chest girth alone fits the number but not the shape. The fronts are pulled up and apart, the lapels lift off the chest, and the hem kicks out at the front. These are fit faults, not cloth faults, and a good fit note prevents them.

What does a barrel chest do to a suit jacket?

It takes length and room from the front. The jacket front has to travel over a rounded chest, so it needs more length from shoulder to waist and more fullness across the chest than a flat chest of the same girth. Without them, the front rides up, the fronts swing open below the button, the lapels stand off and the side seams pull forward. The back may look too long by comparison, with folds below the collar.

Fit issues and what they tell you

  • Fronts swing apart below the button: the front is too short over the chest — ask for more front length.

  • Lapels stand away from the chest: there is not enough chest room — ask for more chest fullness.

  • Hem kicks out at the front: the front balance is short — ask for the front balance to be adjusted.

  • Folds across the back below the collar: the back is long against a short front — ask for the back length to be checked.

  • Pull lines from button to armhole: the chest is tight across — ask for chest room and the armhole to be checked.

Is it a barrel chest or a belly?

Both push the front forward, but at different heights. A barrel chest is high, across the ribs; a belly is low, at the waist. The fit notes differ: a belly needs room and length at the waist button; see suits for men with a belly. Some clients have both. A deliberate fuller chest as a style, rather than for the body, is the drape cut.

What to measure and send

  • Chest girth: at the fullest point, arms relaxed.

  • Over-chest: above the chest, under the arms; the difference to chest girth shows the depth.

  • Front length and back length: from the neck point to the waist, front and back.

  • Waist and seat: as usual.

  • Posture photos: front, side and back, standing naturally; see try-on wrinkles and posture notes.

  • Fit note: "barrel chest, deep ribcage; client stands upright".

The neck and the collar

A forward chest often goes with an upright posture, which moves the collar too. If the collar stands off the neck, see collar gap feedback. Shoulder height on each side is covered in the low shoulder note.

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Barrel chest, deep ribcage, upright posture. Chest, over-chest, front and back lengths attached; photos front, side, back. Please add front length and chest room; keep waist as measured. Two-button jacket (button count written as a word on the order), soft shoulder. Check collar at the neck."

At the sample

  1. Buttoned: do the fronts close flat below the button, without swinging apart?

  2. Side view: does the hem sit level, front to back?

  3. Lapels: do they lie on the chest?

  4. Back: any folds below the collar?

  5. Photograph front, side and back and write corrections in words.

Which track fits a barrel-chested client?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's jacket cut for his chest shape, with the fit note kept on his record for later orders.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's size run where the block suits a broad, deep chest; a body like this is usually served better on the MTM track.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page, and how a shop's measurements become a sample on our how we work page.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Should a barrel-chested client wear a double-breasted jacket? It can work; the overlap needs the same front length and chest room, or it pulls even more.

Does a bigger size fix it? No. A larger size adds width everywhere and still lacks front length.
