Every dinner suit order raises the same question at the counter: cummerbund or waistcoat? For a tailor shop it is part of the client's look. For a hire business or an own-label evening range it is a stock decision, because each piece has to fit a range of waists and match a fleet of jackets. Both are correct; they suit different clients, jackets and events.
Cummerbund or vest with a tuxedo?
Either, but not both. A cummerbund is a pleated sash worn around the waist, over the trouser waistband, with the pleats facing up. An evening waistcoat is a low-cut vest, often with a shawl or peaked lapel, worn under a single-breasted jacket. Both hide the waistband and the shirt where it meets the trousers. How do they match the jacket?
The cummerbund usually matches the lapel facings: satin with satin, grosgrain with grosgrain. The evening waistcoat is cut either in the suit cloth with facing-silk lapels, or fully in the facing silk. Either way, write the facing cloth reference once and use it for the jacket lapels, the trouser braid and the cummerbund or waistcoat. The trousers underneath
Dinner trousers usually have no belt loops. They are held by side adjusters or braces, and the waistband is covered by the cummerbund or waistcoat. Write side adjusters or brace buttons on the trouser; see brace buttons and side adjusters or belt loops.
For a hire fleet or evening range
A cummerbund on an adjustable strap covers a wide spread of waists with a few sizes, which is why hire fleets favour it. A waistcoat needs more sizes, but rents or sells as an upgrade.
