A client's waist changes. A brand's trousers are sold through tailors who will take them in or out for each buyer. In both cases, the question is whether the waist can be altered without remaking the waistband. With a one-piece waistband, there is little to give. With a split back waistband, the tailor opens the centre back seam and moves it. It is a small construction choice that decides whether a pair of trousers can follow its owner.
What is a split back waistband?
The waistband is cut in two pieces, left and right, joined at the centre back where the trouser back seam runs up through it. The seam allowance in the back seam is left wider than needed, and often the waistband seam is opened into a small V at the top, the V-notch. To let the waist out, the tailor unpicks the waistband at the back, lets out the seam into the allowance and closes it again. A continuous waistband, cut in one piece round the back, looks cleaner but offers much less room to alter.
