Trouser Rise and Seat Ease: Notes Overseas MTM Boutiques Should Send the Factory
A jacket can look right while the trousers fail the fitting room — usually because rise and seat ease were never written down. "Make them modern" is not a measurement. Overseas MTM boutiques that send clear rise and seat notes get fewer remakes and fewer clients who blame the factory for a shop-side brief gap.
This guide is for tailor shops and MTM boutiques working with Shi Yuan in Baodi, Tianjin.
Rise: say which rise, and how you measured it
| Term shops use | What to write to the factory | Photo check |
|---|---|---|
| Low rise | Front rise cm from crotch seam to top of waistband (state if over or under band) | Waistband sits below natural waist |
| Mid rise | Same + "mid / at navel" | Band near navel |
| High rise | Same + "high / above navel" | Band clearly above navel |
Always send front rise as a number when you care about it. "High rise" alone is interpreted differently by every cutter. Pair the number with your measurement form fields so body waist and trouser waist are not confused.
Seat ease: the quiet cause of "tight when sitting"
Seat circumference on the pattern is not the same as the client's seat measurement. Ease is the difference. If you do not state a preference, we follow the house block for that style.
Useful notes (pick one):
- "Follow house seat ease";
- "Add __ cm seat ease vs body seat";
- "Match seat ease of client's existing best trousers" (then send those trousers' seat circumference, or the trousers themselves for a rub-off).
Sitting photos catch seat problems better than standing front shots. If the client only sends standing photos, ask for a seated side view before you approve.
What to put in the first WhatsApp for trousers
- Rise preference + front-rise cm if known.
- Seat ease rule (house / add cm / match existing).
- Hem: finished length or unfinished (see our separate unfinished-hem note when you publish that workflow).
- Pleat / flat front, and whether the waistband has side adjusters.
Trouser finish options (cuffs, belt loops, extenders) are covered in our trouser finish options post — use that for trims; use this post for rise and seat.
Sample path for a new house trouser
When you are locking a new house rise for MTM from 1, run one sample client (or a fit model) first. Sample window: 7–14 days after measurements and cloth are confirmed. Approve with front, side, back and seated photos. Production after written approval: 14–21 days for that order path. Details: sample policy and made to measure suit factory.
Common misses we see
- Rise written as "fashion" with no cm.
- Seat complaints after seal because only standing photos were used.
- Mixing high-rise jackets language with low-rise trousers without telling the client how the waist will sit under the jacket.
- Sending body seat but expecting skinny ease.
Worked example (hypothetical)
A Dubai boutique wants a mid-rise flat-front trouser for warm-weather clients. Brief: front rise 26 cm (over band), house seat ease +2 cm vs body seat, unfinished hem. Sample seated photo shows pulling across the seat. They add +1 cm ease on the remake, seal, and reuse the rise line on every later MTM order for that house style.
Send rise and seat with the measurements
Country, monthly volume, MTM, rise line, seat rule. We confirm before cutting.
WhatsApp Shi Yuan about trouser rise/seat
Placement map (write these numbers once)
| Field | What to write | How we check on sample |
|---|---|---|
| Height from finished hem | cm or inches, one unit only | Tape from hem to pocket mouth |
| Distance from side seam | cm / inches | Tape at pocket mouth centre |
| Angle | Parallel to hem / slight rake | Photo with a straight edge if rake is claimed |
| Flap vs jetted | Flap depth or jetted width | Close-up of mouth finish |
| Cloth matching | Match stripe / ignore stripe | Photo of stripe through pocket |
Copy the filled row into WhatsApp with the style name. Do not send a second message that contradicts the first without striking the old numbers.
Private-label vs one-off MTM
On a private-label run from fifty pieces up, the ticket pocket becomes part of the house block. Changing it mid-season means a new sealed sample. On single MTM, you can vary per client, but keep a house default so staff do not reinvent the height every consult.
When to skip the ticket pocket
Skip it on very soft unstructured jackets where a second welt breaks the chest clean, on dinner jackets that already carry a jetted breast pocket story, and on bulk colourways where operators must keep cycle time tight and the brand has no marketing need for the detail. Skipping is a decision — write "no ticket pocket" so nobody adds one from habit.
