Half Canvas vs Fused for an Entry Private-Label Price Tier — Honest Limits

Entry private-label tiers fail in two ways: the jacket feels like a fused shell when the lookbook promised "structured," or the brand jumps to half canvas on every SKU and then cannot hold a margin. The useful question is not "which is luxury?" It is "which construction matches this tier's price, climate and alteration plan?"

This comparison is for clothiers building an entry tier with Shi Yuan Suit Factory in Baodi, Tianjin. It states honest limits — no maison name-drops, no fake price lists.

Full canvas is a third tier — do not collapse "half" and "full" in client-facing copy. Our construction primer: fused / half / full canvas. Margin thinking for boutiques: half canvas boutique margin guide.

Honest limits (read these before you promise the trade)

  1. Fused is not "fake." Bad fused jackets blister; good fused jackets are a legitimate entry build. Spec the fuse map and cloth, then sample.
  2. Half canvas is not full canvas. Saying "canvassed" without "half" or "full" misleads retailers.
  3. Construction will not fix the wrong cloth. A heavy winter cloth in a fused build still feels heavy; a limp cloth in half canvas still looks limp.
  4. We do not publish FOBs on the blog. Quotes depend on cloth, trims and quantity — ask on WhatsApp with a real brief.
  5. Climate matters. Warm markets often prefer lighter fused or soft half-canvas packages; see also warm-climate construction.

How to choose for one entry tier

Use fused when:

  • the tier is the lowest shelf price in your line;
  • volume is graded bulk and retailers accept a clean, light jacket;
  • you will not market the word "canvassed."

Use half canvas when:

  • you need a clear step-up from your fused SKU;
  • chest shape and drape are part of the brand story;
  • you can hold the margin after cloth and duty.

Run one sample of each on the same cloth if you are undecided. Feeling both on a hanger ends arguments faster than a spreadsheet.

Sample both, seal one

Sample window after confirmation: 7–14 days. Approve one construction in writing, then produce that SKU in the 14–21 day production window after approval. Do not mix fused and half-canvas units inside one SKU code. MOQ context for bulk: from 50 — details on manufacturing. MTM programs can still choose per client; see private label / MTM.

Worked example (hypothetical)

A US clothier planned one "canvassed" entry suit. After sampling fused and half canvas on the same mill cloth, they launched fused as Tier A and half canvas as Tier B with different style codes. Retailers understood the step-up; returns on "not canvassed enough" stopped because the hangtag told the truth.

Compare on a sample, not on adjectives

Send country, monthly volume, bulk, and whether you want a fused vs half-canvas sample pair on the same cloth.

Shape families (pick one)

Soft barchettaGentle boat curveSoft shoulder, light canvasSharp padded military shoulder unless intentional
Straight weltHorizontal mouthStructured business blocksClaiming "Neapolitan" in the same brief
Angled weltSlight rake toward the sideFashion-forward house stylesMixing rake direction across a colourway

Lock ritual

  1. Mark the reference photo with a pen curve.
  2. Write family + height from shoulder point or from finished hem — one reference only.
  3. Approve sample photos against that mark.
  4. Write "barchetta locked" on the seal sheet.

If the sample arrives flatter than the mark, say so in one WhatsApp with the crop photo attached. Do not approve and then complain on the bulk.

Height reference — pick one system

Either measure from the finished shoulder point down to the pocket mouth centre, or from the finished hem up. Mixing both in one WhatsApp thread causes a 1–2 cm miss. State the system in the same message as the number.

Soft vs structured reminder

Barchetta shape should agree with the shoulder story you already briefed. If the shoulder is soft, a gentle curve usually reads cleaner than a sharp rake. If you need both a sharp shoulder and a strong boat curve, say so in one line so we do not "average" them on the sample.
