A client's suit jacket still looks new, but the trousers have worn thin between the legs. It is the most common reason suit trousers are retired, and a frequent cause of returns for brands selling to clients who walk a lot or have heavier thighs. Part of the answer is fit, part is cloth, and part is what goes inside the trousers at the crotch. That inside part is easy to specify and easy to forget.
How are suit trousers reinforced at the crotch?
With three inside parts that share the job. A crotch lining, a piece of smooth, strong cloth sewn inside the front and back around the fork, takes the rubbing on the inside. Tape along the seat seam and the fork seam stops those seams stretching. A reinforced stitch, such as a bar tack or a second line of stitching where the seat seam, fork and inseams meet, holds the point that takes the most strain. Together they slow wear; they do not stop it if the trousers are too tight.

Why do trousers wear through there?
Rubbing, strain and fit. Thighs rub the inside of the legs on every step; the seat and fork seams take the strain when the client sits or climbs stairs. Trousers that are tight through the thigh or short in the rise strain those seams more. The fit side is in big thighs and rise and seat ease. Cloth matters too: fine, light worsteds wear faster than firmer cloths, and how seams hold in a cloth is tested by seam slippage and seam strength tests.
