Clients with big thighs — cyclists, rugby players, people who squat — know the off-the-rail routine: buy trousers that fit the legs, then have the waist taken in by several sizes and accept a baggy seat. Or buy trousers that fit the waist and watch the cloth pull into horizontal lines across the thigh every time they sit down.
Made-to-measure does not need the workaround. It needs the right measurements on the order, and a fitter who knows which ones matter for this body. This post covers the four measurements and two notes that do most of the work.
Where these trousers fail
When trousers are cut for a standard thigh and the client's is larger, the strain shows in predictable places: pull lines across the front thigh, pockets that gape open, a crease that twists, and a hem that rides up when the client sits. The cause is rarely the waist. It is the chain from seat to thigh to knee to opening, cut too narrow for the leg.
The four measurements
Seat: fullest part, relaxed stance; fixes gaping pockets and pull at the seat seam.
Thigh: around the fullest part of the upper leg, close to the crotch; fixes pull lines across the front thigh.
Knee: around the leg at the knee, or the desired finished knee width; fixes a twisting crease and cloth catching when sitting.
Leg opening: desired finished width at the hem; fixes a taper that pinches the calf.
Write each as a body measurement or a finished garment width, and say which. The difference is covered in body vs finished garment measurements.
The two notes
Fit preference in words. "Comfortable through the thigh when seated, tapered below the knee" is a clear instruction. "Slim" is not; on a big thigh it means a different thing to every reader.
A sitting photo. Side view, client seated in a well-fitting pair of his own trousers, if he has one. It shows how much the cloth has to give.
Rise and seat ease are treated in more detail in trouser rise and seat ease notes. Height and weight will not capture any of this; see suit measurements based on height and weight.
A worked order line
Client: athletic build, 34 waist, large thighs, wants a tapered look without pull when seated.
Waist: as measured
Seat: as measured, relaxed
Thigh: as measured at the fullest point
Knee: finished width as agreed at the fitting
Leg opening: finished width as agreed
Front: single forward pleat for room, or flat front with ease noted
Note: "No pull across thigh when seated; taper from knee down"
Photo: side view, seated
A pattern maker reading that line knows where the room goes and where it does not.
Cloth and construction choices that help
A cloth with some natural give, or a woven stretch, can make a close thigh more comfortable; a stiff, light worsted shows strain more readily. Stretch wool choices are covered in stretch wool suit fabric briefs. A pleat adds room at the top of the leg without widening the whole trouser. Write the choice; do not leave it to the cutter.
MTM and bulk
On MTM from 1, these measurements are the order. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The sample is where you check the thigh: sit the client down, photograph from the side, and report what you see.
On bulk from 50 per style, a brand with many athletic clients may run an athletic block as its own style — fuller thigh and seat, same waist sizes — sealed and graded separately. Clients outside it go to MTM.
A worked correction (illustrative)
A boutique's first sample for a cyclist fits standing and pulls when seated. The fitter sends one seated side photo and a note: "Pull across both thighs when seated; more room at thigh, keep knee and opening." The correction is recorded on the client's fit record and every later pair is cut with it.

Should the client size up? Not on MTM. Measure the thigh and the waist separately; the pattern carries both.
Do pleats help? A pleat adds room at the top of the leg. Whether it suits the client's style is your call; write it on the order.
Can bulk trousers fit athletic clients? As a separate athletic style from 50, sealed on its own sample.
