Stretch Wool Suits Under Your Label: What to Brief and What to Check on the Sample
Clients who commute, travel or simply sit at a desk all day ask for suits that move. Stretch wool cloths — wool with a small elastane content, or wools woven for mechanical stretch — answer that request, and many private-label brands now carry at least one stretch style. The cloth behaves differently from a standard worsted, though, and those differences belong in the brief before the sample is cut.
Two kinds of stretch
Elastane blend: wool with a small percentage of elastane, as stated by the mill. Stretch comes from the fibre.
Mechanical stretch: wool woven or twisted so the cloth gives without elastane. Stretch comes from the construction of the yarn and weave.
Write in the brief which one the cloth is, using the mill's description and composition. Do not let a sales word like "performance" stand in for the composition.
Brief fields for a stretch suit
Same fields as a list
Cloth: mill reference, composition as stated, weight.
Stretch direction: weft, warp or both, if stated.
Construction: fused or half canvas; ask about interlining compatibility.
Fit intention: same block or slimmer.
Pressing note: ask how the cloth will be pressed and finished.

Why stretch cloths need care
Fusing. Fused interlinings must move with the cloth; a mismatch can show as bubbling or stiffness.
Seams. Stretch cloths can pucker along long seams if thread and stitch are not adjusted.
Pressing. Heat and pressure can affect elastane and leave shine; finishing matters.
Fit. Some brands cut slimmer because the cloth gives. Decide on the sample, not on the swatch.
What to check on the sample
Sit for ten minutes, then stand: do knees and elbows recover?
Look along the side seams and sleeve seams for puckering.
Check the lapel and front edge for bubbling.
Look for shine at pressed edges.
Compare the fit with your standard suit on the same person.

Stretch cloths run on the same clocks as any suit: sample 7–14 days and production 14–21 days, counted after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Cloth availability is confirmed in writing per order; stock and mill-ordered cloth differ, as explained in cloth stock vs mill order. Production days are not delivery days.
