Lining and Shoulder Pad Specs for Private-Label Suits: What UK Clothiers Should Write Before Sample

UK private-label clothiers often brief shell fabric and canvas in detail — then leave lining and shoulder pads as “factory standard.” At Shi Yuan Suit Factory, MTM starts from 1, bulk OEM from 50, samples run 7–14 days after measurements and fabric are confirmed, and production runs 14–21 days after written confirmation. Soft components belong in that confirmation if you want them consistent on reorders.

This guide is for overseas private-label brands specifying the inside of the jacket as carefully as the cloth. It is not for C-end shoppers. Acumenwear is our English export site; the factory brand is Shi Yuan (Baodi, Tianjin · Chengxingwang · Est. 2009).

Why lining and pads become silent brand risk

Breakage points we see from UK private-label teams:

  • Sample approved; bulk lining swapped because stock ran out and nobody wrote a code

  • Shoulder pad thickness changed between seasons without a seal update

  • Sleeve lining color “close enough” under shop LEDs, wrong under daylight

  • Bemberg vs polyester debated after cut

  • Pad shape fights the house shoulder the brand sold on Instagram

Customers may never name the pad — they feel the shoulder. Lining shows every time the jacket opens. Spec it.

What to specify (minimum workable brief)

Lining

  • Body lining: fiber (e.g. cupro / Bemberg-type, polyester, blend) and weight band if you have it

  • Sleeve lining: same or different (state clearly)

  • Color code or approved swatch photo with version date

  • Pattern / stripe / solid rule

  • Pocketing cloth if different from body lining

  • Brand jacquard / printed lining? Attach artwork + placement notes — see also Labels, trims, packaging

Shoulder pads and related soft goods

  • Pad thickness / firmness intent in plain language (soft / medium / structured)

  • Pad shape notes that match your house shoulder

  • Sleeve head roll / wadding preference if part of your seal

  • Chest piece notes only as they relate to your chosen construction (fused / half canvas / full canvas)

You do not need mill poetry. You need codes, photos, and a seal owner.

How specs sit inside construction choice

Construction drives how pads and canvas read on the body:

  • Fused — cleaner cost path; pad and fusible choices still change shoulder feel

  • Half canvas — common boutique balance; pad + canvas interaction matters for margin stories — see Half canvas margins

  • Full canvas — more handwork variables; lock pad and canvas notes with the seal

Do not write “luxury shoulder” without a pad note. Write the construction name and the pad intent.

UK private-label checklist before first sample

  • [ ] Shell fabric confirmed (mill-indent or stock)

  • [ ] Construction named

  • [ ] Body + sleeve lining codes or swatches

  • [ ] Pad firmness / thickness intent written

  • [ ] Artwork for branded lining (if any) attached

  • [ ] Seal owner named for soft-goods substitutions

  • [ ] Reorder rule: same codes required yes/no

  • [ ] If bulk later: qty plan from 50 OEM

Partner pricing is quoted in writing after construction, fabric, and soft-goods scope — not as fake retail price lists on a blog.

What we will push back on

  • “Use your nicest lining” with no fiber or color

  • Changing pad thickness after seal without a new written confirmation

  • Mixing three lining colors across a 50-piece run “to see what sells” without a plan

  • Asking for production dates before lining codes are confirmed when you already rejected factory stock options

Sample path for soft-goods decisions

  1. WhatsApp intake — country, private-label intent, monthly volume band, construction

  2. Soft-goods brief file — lining + pad notes with the shell brief

  3. Sample cut — 7–14 days after measures/block and fabric (including lining path) are confirmed

  4. Seal in writing — including lining and pad as part of the seal, not “optional extras”

  5. Bulk — from 50, production 14–21 days after written confirmation

If lining arrives late, the sample clock waits. That is not hidden lead time — it is incomplete confirm.

How UK brands keep reorders consistent

  • Archive sealed lining snips with the sealed garment

  • Put lining SKU on the same internal tech sheet as shell cloth

  • Freeze substitutions to WhatsApp approval by one person

  • Call out seasonal lining changes as a new seal, not a silent swap

Common questions from UK private-label teams

Can we approve lining on photo only? Photos help; a physical snip or clear code is stronger for reorders.

Do you supply lining or can we send ours? Discuss per order. Customer-supplied soft goods need timing and quantity notes before the sample clock starts.

Must every size sample re-check pads? Not always. Seal the master carefully; call out if short/long sizes need pad variants.

Bottom line for lining and shoulder pads

Private label is more than a woven brand label. Spec lining and pads in writing, seal them with the sample, and reuse those codes on bulk from 50. Then 7–14 and 14–21 day windows describe real work. Your brand owns the hand-feel story; we keep the make consistent.
