Suits for Men with a Belly: Front Balance Notes for the MTM Order

Quick answer: A suit for a man with a belly works when the front is cut longer to travel over the stomach and the trousers sit at a waist the client can keep them on, not when the jacket is simply made bigger. Measure the stomach at its fullest point, add a side photo and front balance notes, and judge the hang on the sample before anything is sealed. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the stomach measurement, a side photo and your notes on WhatsApp.

Clients with a fuller stomach often arrive with the same complaint. Every jacket they own swings open below the button and the vents part at the back. The trousers slide under the belly all day, or sit above it and cut in when they sit. A size up just makes the shoulders too big. The fix is room in the right places, written down.

How do you make a suit look good on a man with a belly?

Aim for a jacket that falls straight over the stomach and closes without strain, and trousers that stay put:

  • Front balance: the fronts need extra length to travel over the stomach, so the hem sits level instead of lifting at the front.

  • Button point: a button at or just above the fullest point holds the front closed; a button below it lets the jacket swing open.

  • Quarters: a closer front cut keeps the fronts from flaring.

  • Trousers: a rise that reaches the natural waist, with a waistband that holds without a tight belt.

Fault to note

  • Hem lifts at the front, dips at the back: front too short for the stomach — write "prominent stomach, add front length; hem level".

  • Fronts swing open below the button: button point too low or quarters too open — write "button at or above fullest point; close quarters".

  • Horizontal pull at the button: waist taken in to look slim — write "button without strain; follow the body".

  • Vents part at the back: seat and stomach room taken from the back — seat as measured, plus "vents to hang closed".

  • Trousers slide under the belly: rise too short or waist measured at the hip — measure rise and waist where the trousers will sit.

  • Waistband rolls when seated: waistband too soft for the load — write "firm waistband", with side adjusters or braces.

Where should his trousers sit?

Agree it with the client and write it down. A client used to trousers under the stomach may not want them higher; that can work if rise and seat are cut for it. Most fitters steer towards the natural waist, because a trouser there stays put. Either way, measure the waist where the waistband will sit. Rise and seat notes are in trouser rise and seat ease; side adjusters versus belt loops in side adjusters or belt loops.

Which jacket details help?

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Prominent stomach, side photo attached. Stomach measured at fullest point. Add front length so hem hangs level. Two-button, top button just above fullest point. Closed quarters. Seat as measured; vents to hang closed. Trousers at natural waist, waist measured there; firm waistband; side adjusters. Judge front hang standing and seated at the sample."

A tall, broad client also needs the big and tall brief; other posture folds are in try-on wrinkles.

At the sample fitting

  1. Client stands relaxed: is the hem level all round?

  2. Jacket buttoned: any pull at the button or flare below it?

  3. Client sits: trousers stay up, waistband does not roll.

  4. Photograph front, side and back; write corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track fits a fuller stomach?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: the front balance notes go on the client's record; once the sample is approved, later suits start from it.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand cutting a portly fit for a size run sets the front balance on the sealed sample and grades it with the chest and waist.

Once the notes are locked, the factory clock runs. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM track is on our made to measure suit factory page.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Will a higher rise make him look bigger? Usually the opposite: the jacket hangs more cleanly.

Are braces better than a belt for this client? Often, because braces hold the trousers from above. Write brace buttons on the order if he agrees.
