Big and Tall Made-to-Measure Suits: The Brief a Specialist Shop Sends a China Factory
Shops that serve big and tall clients are often the most loyal MTM buyers, because ready-to-wear has failed their clients for years. They are also the shops most likely to be disappointed by a factory that treats a big and tall order as a standard size with a few centimetres added. Proportion, posture and cloth quantity all change, and the brief has to say so.
What changes for big and tall clients
Drop is small or reversed. The gap between chest and waist that standard blocks assume often does not exist. Write both measurements; do not let the factory infer one.
Posture carries more weight. A prominent stomach, a forward neck or a flat seat moves the balance of the jacket more on a larger frame.
Proportions need choosing. Jacket length, button position, lapel width and pocket height are proportion decisions, not measurements. Tall clients in particular need them stated.
Cloth quantity rises. Larger garments use more cloth, so cloth availability should be confirmed in writing for the actual garment size.
Same fields as a list
Body measurements: chest, waist, seat, stomach at widest, shoulder, sleeve, back length, neck.
Height and weight: for proportion.
Posture notes: stomach, seat, shoulder slope, neck; include a side photo.
Jacket length and button stance: your fitter's choice in cm.
Lapel and pocket proportion: house preference, if any.
Trouser rise and seat: rise preference and ease.
Cloth: confirmed available for the garment size.
Our measurement form is the base; add the posture and proportion lines above. If your size range goes beyond what a factory normally cuts, ask for confirmation in writing before you promise a client.
Why a sample comes first
For a new big and tall client, a sample (7–14 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked) is the route we recommend. Balance and proportion are hard to judge from numbers alone, and correcting them on a sample costs far less than on a finished suit. Once sealed, repeat orders run on the production window (14–21 days after lock). Production days are not delivery days.

Some specialist shops want a small stocked range for clients who prefer to buy off the rail.
