Custom Suit Lining for MTM Clients: How to Brief Contrast, Printed and Personalised Linings to the Factory
The lining is where many MTM clients feel the suit becomes theirs: a bright contrast, a print for a wedding, initials inside the jacket. For the shop, it is also the most common source of last-minute changes — the client sees a new lining in a magazine after the order is placed. A clear lining brief, locked with the rest of the order, keeps the choice personal without letting it move the clock.
Same requests as a list
Contrast lining: name the reference and colour; confirm availability.
Customer-supplied printed lining: state it is client-supplied, quantity and fibre; confirm suitability. Image rights are the shop's and client's responsibility.
Personalised detail: characters, thread colour and placement; confirm in writing whether and how it can be done for that order.
Different sleeve lining: name the reference; confirm availability.
Placement words that avoid back-and-forth
"Inside left breast, above the pocket" — not "inside".
"Under the collar" — state colour of thread against the melton.
"Full lining / half lining / quarter lining" — say which, because it changes how much printed lining shows.
Lining coverage and specs are set out in lining and shoulder pad specs.
When the lining must be locked
Lining is part of construction. The sample and production clocks start after measurements, cloth and construction — lining included — are locked: sample 7–14 days, production 14–21 days. A lining change after lock is a new lock, and the clock restarts from it. Our post on changes after lock explains how that is confirmed. Production days are not delivery days.
Practical rule for the shop: let the client choose the lining at the measuring appointment, write it in the brief, and treat later changes as a new order date.
Wedding and event linings
Printed linings for weddings are popular and time-sensitive. If the lining is client-supplied, the cloth has to reach the factory before the order can be locked, so add its transit to your plan. Ask on WhatsApp +65 8013 8838 what quantity and width to send before the client orders the print.
House linings for private label
For a private-label brand, the lining is usually a trim, not a personal choice: one house lining or a small set, specified on the trims list and sealed with the sample. That runs as bulk from 50 per style. Individual client choices belong to MTM from 1 orders. Our private label suit manufacturer page covers bulk trims; our made to measure suit factory page covers individual MTM orders.
