The client buttons the sample, turns side-on to the mirror, and there it is: a gap between the jacket collar and the shirt collar at the back of the neck. The chest is right, the sleeves are right, and the collar sits away from the neck. Of all sample faults it is one of the easiest to see and one of the hardest to describe in a message. "Collar gap, please fix" leaves the pattern maker guessing which of several causes it is.
This post sets out the usual causes in plain terms, what the fitter should photograph and measure, and a report format that gets the correction onto the next garment.
What a collar gap usually means
A collar gap is a symptom. In general, the common causes are:
Posture: a client who stands very upright, or carries the head forward, changes how the back neck sits compared with the block.
Shoulder slope: a client with squarer or more sloping shoulders than the block lifts or drops the collar.
Back neck and balance: the length from the back neck to the waist, front and back, sets where the collar rests.
Collar itself: a collar cut too long for the neckline stands away; too short and it pulls.
The fitter's job is not to diagnose the pattern but to give the pattern maker enough evidence to tell these apart. How posture shows up as wrinkles on a try-on is covered in try-on wrinkles and posture notes.
The collar gap report
Side photo, relaxed stance: client stands naturally, arms down, shirt and tie as worn — shows posture and where the gap opens.
Back photo: square to the camera, collar and shoulders in frame — shows whether the gap is centred or one-sided.
Gap size: measured at centre back with the jacket buttoned — gives the pattern maker a scale.
Pinned photo: fitter pins out the gap and photographs it — shows where the excess sits.
Shoulder note: square, sloping, or one side lower — separates slope from collar length.
Jacket buttoned: both photos buttoned — unbuttoned jackets fall differently.
The general photo set for any sample review is in the MTM sample feedback photo set.
A worked report
"Order ref: client 0412, sample 1. Collar stands off the shirt at centre back, about one finger width, jacket buttoned. Client stands upright, shoulders slightly square. Pinned photo attached: excess sits across the upper back below the collar, not in the collar itself. Chest, sleeves and length approved. Please correct and confirm on the thread."
Notice what the report does: it separates approved areas from the fault, says where the excess sits, and records the posture. The same discipline for sleeve faults is shown in how to report sleeve pitch.
Before you report: rule out the easy causes
Is the client wearing the shirt and tie they will wear with the suit? A lower shirt collar can make a gap look larger.
Has the jacket been hung for a day after travel? Folds from the parcel can lift the collar.
Is the client standing as they normally stand, not posing?
What happens to the correction
On MTM from 1, the correction goes into the client's record so every later garment starts from it. On bulk from 50 per style, a collar gap on the sample means the block is corrected before the run, and the correction is checked across the size range on the sealed sample. Either way, the correction is confirmed in writing on the thread before production starts. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The sample review steps are on our sample policy page, and the MTM track on our made to measure suit factory page.

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Can a collar gap be fixed by alteration in the shop? Sometimes, by a skilled tailor. Reporting it still matters so the next garment does not need the same work.
Is a collar gap always a pattern fault? No. Posture, the shirt worn and parcel folds can all play a part; that is why the report separates them.
Do you need the client in the shop for the photos? Yes. Photos on a hanger or a form do not show posture.
