Quick answer: A drape cut suit is a jacket with deliberate soft fullness in the chest and over the shoulder blades, a fairly high armhole and a shaped waist, and the brief has to ask for that fullness in words or the factory will cut a clean, flat chest. Name the drape, describe where the extra cloth should sit, add a reference photo and judge the folds standing and moving on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send a reference photo and your drape notes on WhatsApp.
The drape cut is a London house style. The jacket carries extra cloth across the chest and over the shoulder blades, so soft vertical folds form near the armholes when the client stands with his arms down. The armhole is cut fairly high and the waist is suppressed, so the fullness above reads as comfort and a broad, easy chest, not as a jacket that is too big. Unbriefed factories often "correct" it, because on a stand the folds look like a fault.
What is a drape cut suit?
It is a jacket cut with controlled extra width in the chest and blades, held in by a high armhole and a defined waist. The fullness is meant to fold softly; it gives the client room to move his arms and makes the chest look fuller. It is a choice of cut, not a fit correction, which is why it has to be written down; medium-weight cloth with a soft hand drapes best.
Drape against a clean chest
Chest: drape — soft fullness with folds near the armhole; clean chest — smooth and close to the body.
Blades: drape — extra cloth over the shoulder blades; clean chest — back lies flat.
Armhole: drape — fairly high; clean chest — high or medium, as house style.
Waist: drape — defined, so the fullness reads above it; clean chest — defined or straighter.
Shoulder: drape — natural or lightly padded, often a soft sleeve head; clean chest — any.
Trousers: drape — higher rise, pleats common; clean chest — any.
Risk at sample: drape — the folds get "corrected" away; clean chest — not relevant.
How is a drape different from a sack suit or a jacket that is too big?
The sack suit is straight and undarted, with little waist shaping and no planned fullness. A jacket that is simply too big has folds everywhere: at the chest, the back, the waist and the sleeves, and the shoulder hangs over the arm. A drape has folds in two planned places, near the armholes at the front and over the blades at the back, and is close at the waist and shoulder point. The armhole is the giveaway: a high armhole with fullness above the waist is a drape; a low, loose armhole is a size problem. More on the armhole in the high armhole spec.
Which brief lines carry the drape?
Style name and reference: "English drape" plus a front and back photo of the look you want.
Chest: "soft fullness at chest, folds near armhole when arms down; do not smooth away".
Blades: "extra cloth over the blades; back not flat".
Armhole: "high armhole" — the drape relies on it.
Waist: "defined waist below the fullness".
Shoulder: natural or light pad, written as your house prefers; see soft or structured shoulder.
Lapel: many drape jackets are double-breasted or have a wide peak lapel; if so, see the double-breasted sample lock.
Trousers: rise and pleats; see pleated or flat front.
House-style wording in general is in house silhouette notes; this page is the drape-specific version.
A worked note
"Brand ref A-12. House style: English drape. Front and back reference photos attached. Soft fullness at chest, folds near armhole arms down; extra cloth over blades. High armhole. Defined waist. Natural shoulder, light pad, soft sleeve head. Peak lapel, two-button. Trousers: higher rise, double forward pleats. Do not smooth chest at pressing."
At the sample
Client or stand with arms down: soft folds near the armholes at the front, and over the blades at the back?
Arms raised and forward: the jacket moves without pulling at the back.
Waist: close, so the fullness reads above it.
Shoulder point: the sleeve hangs clean, with no overhang.
Photograph front, back and side, arms down and arms forward; write corrections in words.
Which track fits a drape cut?
MTM — from 1 piece: the drape notes go on each client's order and on his record once his sample is approved.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand making the drape its house cut fixes the chest and blade fullness on the sealed sample, so every size in the run carries the same drape; bulk programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page, and bulk programmes on our suit manufacturer China page.

FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Is a drape cut the same as a loose fit? No. The fullness sits in the chest and blades; the waist and shoulder point stay close.
Does a drape cut suit every build? It flatters slim and medium builds most. On a heavy chest, ask for less fullness and judge it at the sample.
