Quick answer: A suit for a pear-shaped man works when the jacket is cut from the hip and seat as well as the chest, so the skirt and vents fall clean, and the shoulder line is given a little more presence instead of sizing the whole jacket up. Measure the hip at its fullest point, add a side and a back photo, write the skirt, vent and trouser seat notes on the order and judge the back on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the hip measurement, side and back photos and your notes on WhatsApp.
A pear-shaped client has narrower shoulders and a fuller seat and hips. Off the rail, he faces a choice he never wins: buy the jacket that fits his chest and watch the skirt grip his hips, or buy the size that clears his hips and drown in the shoulders. MTM fixes this when the order says where the body is.
How should a suit fit a man with wide hips?
The jacket should fit the chest and shoulders closely and then release over the hips, so the fronts close without pulling and the back falls straight to the hem. The trousers should hold the waist and give the seat room to sit. In practice:
Skirt: the part of the jacket below the waist button needs its own hip measurement and enough flare to clear the seat.
Vents: they should hang closed when the client stands; a vent that spreads is asking for more hip room.
Shoulders: a slightly firmer, cleaner shoulder line balances the silhouette; it does not mean a wider jacket.
Length: long enough to cover the seat, no longer.
Trousers: seat cut from the seat measurement, waist from the waist, never one size for both.
What you see, and what to write
Fronts pull open below the button: skirt cut from chest size, not hip — write "hip measured at fullest point; skirt to clear hip, fronts close flat".
Vents spread and show the seat: not enough hip room at the back — write "vents to hang closed standing; add seat room to the back skirt".
Horizontal folds across the seat: back skirt too tight — same note, plus a side photo with the jacket buttoned.
Shoulders look narrow against the hips: natural build — write "clean shoulder line, light pad; do not widen chest".
Trouser pockets flare open: hip too tight on the trousers — write "hip as measured; pockets to lie flat".
Waistband gaps at the back: waist cut to fit the seat — write waist and seat separately.
Which measurements carry the order?
Chest, waist and hip, each taken where the garment will sit, plus jacket length and the trouser seat. The hip is the line shops most often skip on a jacket order, and for a pear-shaped client it decides the skirt. Take it standing relaxed, over thin trousers, at the fullest part of the seat, and mark it as a body figure so the factory adds ease.
Trouser seat and rise are covered in trouser rise and seat ease; if the client also carries weight at the thigh, add the notes from suit trousers for big thighs. A client who is full at the stomach rather than the hips needs the front balance notes in suits for men with a belly instead.
Which jacket details help a pear-shaped client?
Double vents usually move better over a full seat than a single vent; see single or double vent.
Flap pockets at the hip add bulk where the client is widest; jetted pockets keep the line flatter.
A slightly longer jacket that covers the seat reads cleaner than one that stops at its fullest point; jacket lengths are discussed in short, regular and long jackets.
Plain trouser fronts or a single pleat, with a straight leg that balances the hip.
A worked note
"Client ref A-12. Pear build: hip fuller than chest. Hip measured at fullest point over thin trousers; body figure, add ease. Skirt to clear hip, fronts close flat below the button. Double vents, to hang closed standing. Clean shoulder line, light pad, chest as measured. Jacket length to cover seat. Jetted hip pockets. Trousers: waist and seat as measured separately, single pleat, straight leg. Back and side photos attached."
At the sample fitting
Client stands relaxed, jacket buttoned: do the fronts lie flat below the button?
From the back: vents closed, no folds across the seat?
From the side: hem level, skirt clear of the seat?
Client sits: trouser pockets flat, waistband not gapping at the back.
Photograph front, side and back; write corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page, and wrinkles that come from posture are read in try-on wrinkles.
Which track fits a pear-shaped client?
MTM — from 1 piece: the hip, skirt and seat notes go on the client's record; once his sample is approved, later suits start from it.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand with many pear-shaped customers can set a fuller-hip block on the sealed sample and grade it with the size run.
Once the notes are locked, the factory clock runs. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page.
