Quick answer: A half belt, also called a martingale, is a short strap of self cloth across the back of a jacket or coat at about the natural waist, sewn or buttoned at each end, and the brief has to fix its height, its length, how it is fixed and what it does to the back pleat or vent below it. Choose sewn or buttoned, set the belt relative to the natural waist on the fit model, write the back pleat or vent with it, and judge the back on a person, standing and with arms forward. The half belt is one of the most recognisable backs in tailoring. It turns up on sport coats with a sporting history, on guards-style overcoats, and on country jackets. For a client, it gives a plain jacket a shape at the back that reads from across a room. For a brand, it is a way to make an odd jacket or an overcoat its own. It is also easy to misplace: a belt set a little too high makes the jacket look short; a pleat under it that falls open looks untidy.
What is a half belt on a jacket?
It is a strap of the jacket cloth set across the back, between the side seams or the back darts, roughly at the natural waist. It may be purely decorative, sewn flat at both ends, or it may be buttoned so it can be let out. Under it, the back often has an inverted box pleat that opens for movement and is held closed at the waist by the belt. On an overcoat, the belt also gathers the extra width of a fuller back.
Half belt options
Sewn half belt: fixed flat at both ends — a clean sport coat back.
Buttoned half belt: a button at each end, adjustable — for overcoats and fuller backs.
Half belt over box pleat: the pleat opens above and below the belt — for movement and country jackets.
Half belt with centre vent: the vent runs up to the belt — for overcoats and long jackets.
Split belt at side seams: two short belts at the sides — softer back shaping.
Where should the half belt sit?
At the natural waist, which is higher than the trouser waistband and higher than most first samples set it. Write it relative to the body, not the hem: "belt at natural waist on fit model". A belt set too low makes the back look long and the legs short; set too high, the jacket looks cropped. Length matters too: a belt that runs between the back darts looks neater on a slim jacket; one that runs to the side seams suits a fuller coat.
Half belt, pleats and vents
The belt usually works with something underneath. An inverted pleat below the yoke gives room to reach, which is the point of a sporting back; the full pleated, belted style is the Norfolk jacket, and pleats at the sleeve-back for movement are in the action back brief. On an overcoat, a centre vent running up to the belt is classic; overcoat sizing over a jacket is in overcoat measurement deltas.
The brief lines

Height: at natural waist on the fit model.

Cloth direction: stripes and checks matched across the belt; see stripe and check matching.
A worked note
"Client ref A-12. Sport coat, tweed-look cloth, reference attached. Half belt buttoned at both ends, between back darts, at natural waist on the client. Inverted box pleat from yoke to hem, held by the belt. No vent. Belt ends pointed. Check matched across belt and back."
At the sample
Standing: does the belt sit at the natural waist, level across the back?
Arms forward: does the pleat open above and below the belt without pulling?
Standing again: does the pleat close flat?
Side view: does the back hang straight, with no bulge below the belt?
Photograph the back standing and with arms forward; write corrections in words.
Which track fits a half belt jacket?
MTM — from 1 piece: one client's sport coat or overcoat with the belt height written relative to his natural waist on his order.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's belted-back jacket or coat in a size run, with belt height, length and pleat fixed on the sealed sample and graded through the run.
