Action Back Jacket: Bi-Swing Pleats and Gussets, and How to Brief Them

Quick answer: An action back jacket has extra cloth folded into pleats or gussets behind the shoulders, so the wearer can reach forward or swing his arms without the back pulling tight, and the brief has to say which type, where the pleats sit and how they stay closed at rest. Pick the back type, add a reference photo, write placement and closure, and judge the back at rest and with the arms forward on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send a reference photo of the back you want on WhatsApp.

The action back started on sporting jackets for shooting, golf and riding, where a fitted back tears or pulls the moment the arms swing. Today it turns up on heritage sport coats, tweed jackets and some casual tailoring, both for the movement and for the look. It is a small piece of pattern work with a visible result: done well, the back lies flat at rest and opens when the wearer reaches; done badly, the pleats gape standing still or do nothing when he moves.

What is an action back on a jacket?

It is extra width built into the back of the jacket, folded away so the jacket still looks fitted. The two common forms are the bi-swing, with pleats or gussets running down from the back of each armhole, and the centre or side pleat, a folded panel across the back below the collar or at the shoulder blades. Many action backs are held at the waist by a half belt, which keeps the pleats closed when the wearer stands.

Back types, and what to write

  • Bi-swing: pleats or gussets from the back of each armhole — the folds lie closed along the blades at rest; for sport coats, golf and shooting jackets.

  • Centre back pleat: one folded panel down the centre back — closed, often held by a half belt; for country jackets.

  • Side pleats: two pleats at the blades — closed, sometimes with a half belt; for heritage and casual jackets.

  • Plain back, high armhole: no pleats; the movement comes from the armhole cut — flat; for suits and city jackets.

For many clients a well-cut armhole gives enough movement without pleats; see the high armhole spec.

How is this different from a Norfolk or a safari jacket?

The Norfolk jacket is a whole style, with a full belt and box pleats front and back. The safari jacket is defined by its pockets and belt. An action back is a back treatment that can go on a plain sport coat, a tweed jacket or a blazer without changing the front.

The brief lines

  • Type: bi-swing, centre pleat or side pleats, with a back reference photo.

  • Depth: "shallow" for a city look, "deeper" for real sporting use; judged on the sample.

  • Closure: "pleats stitched closed at the top, free below" or "held by half belt at waist".

  • Lining: the lining needs a matching pleat, or it stops the cloth opening; write "lining pleat to follow back pleats".

  • Vent: a centre vent below a centre pleat, or side vents with a bi-swing; see single or double vent.

  • Cloth: firm cloths hold a pleat crisply; tweed is the classic, see the tweed brief. Light cloths can flutter open.

  • Pattern: on checks, the pattern should run through the pleats; see stripe and check matching.

The rest of the jacket follows the sport coat sample points.

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Sport coat with bi-swing back: pleats from the back of each armhole, stitched closed at the top, free below. Half belt at waist, two buttons. Lining pleat to follow back pleats. Side vents. Tweed, check matched through pleats and belt. Back reference photo attached."

At the sample

  1. Standing, arms down: do the pleats lie closed and the back hang clean?

  2. Arms forward, as if reaching across a table: does the back open without pulling at the collar?

  3. A full swing, as for golf: does the jacket stay down at the collar and hem?

  4. Inside: does the lining follow the pleats?

  5. Photograph the back at rest and with the arms forward; write corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track fits an action back jacket?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's jacket with the back type and closure on his order and record.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's sporting or heritage jacket, with pleat type, depth and closure fixed on the sealed sample and graded through the size run.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page.

Can a suit jacket have an action back? It can, but it reads as sporting. For city suits, a high armhole usually gives the movement with a plain back.
