What is a brocade dinner jacket?
It is an evening jacket, usually with a shawl or peak lapel faced in satin or grosgrain, cut from brocade and worn with plain black or midnight trousers and a bow tie. Brocade carries its pattern in the weave rather than printed on top, so the motif has texture and catches light. Fronts: mirrored left and right, so the jacket looks balanced when buttoned.
Front edge and pockets: the motif carries across the front edge and pocket flaps where possible.
Sleeves: the motif sits at the same height on both sleeves.
Direction: motifs with a top and bottom, such as flowers on stems, all point the same way.
