Velvet Dinner Jackets Under Your Label: Pile Direction, Pressing and Shawl Collar in the Brief
Velvet jackets are a December rail item for many boutiques: a green, burgundy or black shawl-collar jacket worn with dinner trousers. They look simple on a mood board. On the cutting table, velvet asks questions that worsted does not, and the brief should answer them before any sample is made.
Why velvet needs its own brief
Pile direction. Velvet has a nap. Panels cut in different directions read as different shades. The brief should say "all panels one direction" and the sample proves it.
Pressing. Heavy pressing can flatten pile and leave marks. Ask how the jacket will be pressed and finished, and check the lapel and pocket areas on the sample.
Seam bulk. Thicker pile at the collar and front edge changes how the shawl rolls.
Handling marks. Pile shows hand and hanger marks; packing matters.

Timing
Same clocks as any jacket: sample 7–14 days, production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. For December rails, work back with our December cutoff sheet.
