Tweed Suit Fabric for MTM Orders: Heavy-Cloth Notes to Brief Before the Sample

Tweed comes back every autumn: country weddings, shooting-season clients, and city clients who want texture. For the shop, tweed is a different job from a smooth worsted. It is usually a heavier woollen cloth with a rough, springy surface, and it often carries a check or herringbone. Each of those facts changes something in cutting and making, and each belongs in the brief.

Three things that make tweed different

  • Weight and thickness. Heavier cloth means bulk at seams, darts, collar and pocket corners. What is invisible on a light worsted shows on tweed.

  • Surface. Woollen yarns are hairy and textured. Pressing flattens texture if overdone, and some interlinings bond differently to a rough surface.

  • Pattern. Checks, overchecks and herringbones need matching at the front, pockets, back seam and sleeves, which uses more cloth.

Brief fields for a tweed suit or jacket

Field What to write Cloth Reference, weight as stated, composition Pattern Check or herringbone; which points must match Construction Half or full canvas preferred; ask about fusing on this cloth Pockets Flap, patch, ticket pocket; your house choice Lining Full lining is common on heavy cloth; state colour Trousers Rise, side adjusters or belt loops, turn-ups Purpose Suit, odd jacket, or three-piece

Same fields as a list

  • Cloth: reference, weight, composition as stated.

  • Pattern: check or herringbone, and which points must match.

  • Construction: half or full canvas preferred; ask about fusing.

  • Pockets: flap, patch, ticket pocket — your choice.

  • Lining: usually full on heavy cloth; state colour.

  • Trousers: rise, side adjusters or belt loops, turn-ups.

  • Purpose: suit, odd jacket or three-piece.

Pattern matching is covered in detail in stripe and check matching; for an odd jacket rather than a suit, see sport coat sample points.

Cloth quantity and route

Pattern matching and heavier cloth both raise the quantity needed. Confirm in writing that enough cloth is available for the garment and pattern before you promise the client. Many tweeds are ordered in or supplied by the client; if so, the clock starts after the cloth arrives. A tweed bought by the client from a weaver can run as customer-supplied cloth — the three cloth routes explain how each route starts the clock.

What to check on the sample

  1. Seam and dart bulk: flat from the outside?

  2. Collar and lapel: does the roll sit despite the thickness?

  3. Pattern: aligned at the points you named.

  4. Surface: texture intact, no flattened or shiny patches from pressing.

  5. Comfort: armhole and sleeve allow movement in a heavy cloth.

Clocks and tracks

Tweed runs on our standard clocks: sample 7–14 days and production 14–21 days, counted after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days, so for an autumn wedding, work back from the date with freight and fitting added. Seasonal timing is in the seasonal fabric booking calendar.

A client tweed suit is MTM from 1; our made to measure suit factory page covers that track. A brand adding a tweed jacket to its autumn range runs bulk from 50 per style, with cloth quantity planned for the full size run — see our private label suit manufacturer page.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked.

Is tweed harder to make? It needs more attention at seams, pattern points and pressing; the clocks are the same.

Do tweed suits need full canvas? Not necessarily; half canvas is common. Construction is confirmed with the cloth before the sample.

Can the client supply a tweed they bought? Yes, as customer-supplied cloth; ask first about quantity for the pattern.
