Fob Pocket Trousers: Where the Watch Pocket Goes and How to Brief It

Quick answer: A fob pocket is a small, shallow pocket set into the front of suit trousers at or just below the waistband, usually on the right, first made for a pocket watch and now used for a key fob, coins or a ticket, and the brief should fix its side, its height and its opening style. Write the side, set it relative to the waistband and the pleat, choose a plain opening or a small flap, and check on the sample that it lies flat when the client sits. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the side you want and the trouser front style on WhatsApp.

Fob pockets come back with every heritage revival and every three-piece order. A client who wears a pocket watch with a waistcoat wants one; so does the client who simply likes a place for a car key that is not the side pocket. A brand with a classic trouser block adds one as a signature detail. It is a small pocket, but in the wrong place it gapes over a pleat or catches the waistband, so it is worth a line in the brief.

What is a fob pocket on trousers?

It is a small pocket, also called a watch pocket, cut into the front of the trousers at the waistband line or just under it. The opening is a short slit, sometimes with a narrow welt or a tiny flap, and the bag behind it is shallow so the contents sit high and stay put. On suit trousers it is usually on the right, near the front crease line or between the pleat and the side pocket.

Fob pocket options

  • Waistband-seam opening: the opening hidden in the waistband seam — clean and almost invisible.

  • Welted slit below the waistband: a short welt just under the waistband — the classic watch pocket.

  • Small flap: a narrow flap over the opening — for heritage and country trousers.

  • Fob with chain loop: a small loop or buttonhole for a chain — for pocket-watch wearers.

  • No fob pocket: a plain front — for most suit trousers.

Where does a fob pocket go?

On the right front, usually, set so the opening runs along or just under the waistband and sits between the pleat and the side pocket. Write it relative to the trouser parts, not as a number: "right side, opening in waistband seam, between pleat and side pocket". On a pleated front, the pocket must clear the pleat so the pleat still opens; see pleated or flat front. With slant side pockets, keep a gap between the two openings; see side pockets.

With braces and a waistcoat

A pocket watch and chain usually go with a waistcoat, and the trousers are often worn on braces with a higher rise. Brace buttons are briefed separately; see brace buttons. If the waistcoat covers the waistband, the chain runs from the fob pocket to a waistcoat buttonhole; write that the waistcoat needs a chain hole. The waistcoat points are in the waistcoat sample points.

The brief lines

  • Side: right, left or both.

  • Opening: waistband seam, welted slit or flap.

  • Bag: shallow, in the trouser pocketing; see trouser pocketing.

  • Chain loop: yes or no.

  • Clearances: clear of pleat, clear of side pocket.

  • Back pockets: written as usual; see hip pocket count.

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Three-piece suit trousers, forward pleat, slant side pockets. Fob pocket right side, opening in waistband seam, between pleat and side pocket. Shallow bag in pocketing. Small chain loop inside opening. Waistcoat: chain hole at third buttonhole from top (written as a word on the order)."

At the sample

  1. Standing: is the opening flat and level with the waistband?

  2. Seated: does the pocket gape or pull the pleat?

  3. With a key fob or watch inside: does the front stay smooth?

  4. Clearances: does the pleat still open and the side pocket stay closed?

  5. Photograph the front standing and seated; write corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track fits a fob pocket?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's trousers with the fob pocket side and opening on his order, repeated on every later pair.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's trouser block with the fob pocket fixed on the sealed sample and graded so the pocket keeps its place through the size run.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page.
