Quick answer: A trouser heel guard is a strip of hard-wearing tape sewn inside the back of the hem, where the shoe heel rubs, so the suit cloth does not fray or shine there, and the brief should say whether you want one, which type, which colour and how it sits with the hem style. Write heel guard yes or no, the tape type and colour, and the hem style it goes with, then check the tape position on the sample with the client in his shoes. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the hem style and the tape colour on WhatsApp.
Suit trousers usually wear out at the back hem before anything else. Every step brushes the back of the hem against the shoe heel, and a fine worsted starts to shine, then fray, long before the seat or the knee give way. A heel guard is a small piece of tape that takes that wear instead. Clients rarely notice it is there; they notice when it is missing.
What is a heel guard on trousers?
It is a narrow band of strong woven tape, sometimes called heel tape or kick tape, sewn inside the trouser leg along the back of the hem. When the trousers are worn, the tape sits just at the fold of the hem, so the shoe heel rubs the tape, not the suit cloth. It is usually stitched at both edges and can be finished so it shows as a thin line inside the hem.
Heel guard options
Plain heel tape: woven tape sewn inside the back hem — for most suit trousers.
Colour-matched tape: tape dyed close to the cloth — for plain hems where the inside can show.
Contrast or branded tape: a colour or woven tape from the brand — a private-label signature detail.
No heel guard: the hem left plain inside — for very light trousers, or when the client asks.
Heel guard with turn-ups: tape set inside the turn-up fold — for trousers with turn-ups.
Where does the heel guard go?
Along the back half of the hem, from side seam to side seam, or across the back panel. The tape should sit right at the fold, so the edge that touches the shoe is tape. Set too high, it does nothing; set too low, it shows below the hem. Write "heel guard at back hem fold" and let the sample show the position.
How it works with the hem style
Finished plain hem: tape sewn in at the fold, then the hem finished.
Turn-ups: the tape sits inside the turn-up; see turn-ups.
Unfinished hem for the shop to finish: the shop fits the tape when it sets the length; the factory can send the tape with the trousers. See unfinished hems.
Length and break: a full break rubs the shoe more; see the trouser break guide.
A private-label detail
Some brands use a woven tape in their own colour or with their name, the same way they choose a lining or a pocketing. It is a small cost of detail that shows each time the client turns up a hem. Pocket bag cloth is the matching inside detail; see trouser pocketing. Write the tape reference on the trim list so it repeats through the run; see the trim lock.
A worked note
"Client ref A-12. Suit trousers, plain finished hem, slight break. Heel guard at back hem fold, side seam to side seam. Tape colour matched to cloth. Hem stitched blind. Same detail on the second pair of trousers."
At the sample
Inside the hem: is the tape straight and stitched at both edges?
With shoes on, standing: does the tape sit at the fold, not showing below?
Walking: does the heel touch tape, not cloth?
Pressed hem: no ridge from the tape on the outside?
Photograph the inside of the hem and the trousers worn with shoes; write corrections in words.
Which track fits a heel guard?
MTM — from 1 piece: one client's trousers with the heel guard noted on his order and record, so every later pair repeats it.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's trouser in a size run, with the tape type, colour and position fixed on the sealed sample and listed on the trim list.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk trouser programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page, and the single-client route on our made to measure suit factory page.

Can a heel guard be added later? A tailor can add one, but it is easier and neater when it goes in at the factory.
