Pocketing is the cloth nobody chooses on purpose. It sits inside the side pockets, hip pockets and watch pocket of trousers, and inside some jacket pockets, and it carries keys, phones and hands every day. When it is wrong, customers find out late: a hole in the corner of a side pocket, a pale outline of the pocket bag showing through summer trousers, or a pocket that puckers the front after the first clean. For a private-label brand those are returns; for a tailor shop they are remakes.
What is pocketing fabric, and why does it matter in a suit?
It is a smooth, dense woven cloth made to take friction. In suit trousers it forms the bag of each pocket, sewn to facings of the shell cloth at the opening. It needs to be strong at the seams and the corners, smooth so hands slide in, light so it does not add bulk at the hip, and stable so it shrinks no more than the shell.
Pocketing types
Cotton pocketing: soft and breathable — good for natural-fibre lines and summer trousers; can wear sooner at the corners.
Polyester-cotton pocketing: strong and smooth — good for most suit trousers; feels less soft.
Lining cloth: very smooth and light — good for jacket pockets; can tear under heavy loads.
Printed or branded pocketing: carries a brand mark — good for private-label lines; check colour fastness on light shells.

Pale cloths and summer trousers
Linen, light cotton and pale worsteds show what is underneath. A white or mid-tone pocket bag under stone or sand cloth leaves an outline at the hip.
