Throat Latch Jacket: The Collar Tab on Sport Coats and How to Brief It

Quick answer: A throat latch is a small cloth tab that sits under the jacket collar and buttons across the neck when the collar is turned up, and the brief must fix the tab shape, where it is stored, how it fastens and how the collar is cut so the lapels still roll cleanly when it is not in use. Add a reference photo, write tab shape, storage and fastening as one line each, and judge the collar up and down on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send a reference photo of the collar on WhatsApp.

The throat latch comes from riding and shooting jackets, where a rider needed to close the neck against wind and rain without a scarf. Today it appears on tweed sport coats, country jackets and heritage lines as a working detail that clients like to discover. It is small, and it touches the most visible part of the jacket: the collar. A badly placed tab shows below the collar, adds bulk at the neck, or stops the collar sitting when it is turned up.

What is a throat latch on a jacket?

It is a tab of the jacket cloth, shaped and lined, that is stored under the collar or under one lapel when not in use. When the wearer turns the collar up, the tab swings across the throat and buttons to the opposite side, holding the collar closed. Some tabs are fixed at one end and button at the other; some are fully detachable.

The parts, and what to write

  • Tab shape: pointed, rounded or straight — write the shape, with a reference photo.

  • Storage: buttoned under the collar, or under a lapel — write where it sits when not used.

  • Fastening: one button each end, or fixed at one end — write the button positions.

  • Collar: a collar stand high enough to turn up — write "collar to stand when turned up".

  • Undercollar: melton or cloth — colour matched to the jacket.

  • Buttons: matching the front buttons in a smaller size — write type and colour.

  • Cloth: tweed and firm cloths suit it — same as the jacket.

Why would a brand or shop add one?

It suits jackets that are worn outdoors: tweed sport coats, country jackets and heritage lines. It gives a reason to turn the collar up, and it is a detail that separates a considered jacket from a plain one. It looks out of place on a city suit, so most shops keep it to sport coats; see the sport coat sample points and the tweed brief. A belted country style that often carries one is in the Norfolk jacket brief.

Where do throat latches go wrong?

  • The tab shows below the collar. It should be hidden when stored; write "tab hidden when stored".

  • Bulk at the neck. A tab in heavy cloth, lined thickly, makes the collar stand away; see collar gap feedback.

  • The collar will not stand. A collar cut for rolling flat may fold over when turned up. Ask for the collar to be tried up and down on the sample.

  • Undercollar shows. With the collar up, the undercollar is on display; match its colour, see undercollar colour match.

  • Buttonholes on show. A buttonhole on the lapel for the tab is visible when the collar is down; decide whether it is a feature or hidden.

Lapel width and gorge height change how the collar sits when turned up; see lapel width and gorge. Buttonhole finishes are in button and buttonhole specs.

A worked note

"Client ref A-12. Tweed sport coat with throat latch: pointed tab in jacket cloth, lined in matching melton, stored buttoned under the collar, hidden when stored. Buttons across the throat to the left lapel when the collar is turned up. Small horn-look buttons matching the front. Collar to stand when turned up; undercollar melton colour matched. Reference photo attached."

At the sample

  1. Collar down: is the tab hidden, with no bulk at the neck?

  2. Collar up: does it stand without folding over?

  3. Tab fastened: does it close the neck without pulling the lapels out of shape?

  4. Undercollar: colour matched when on show?

  5. Photograph collar down and up, front and side; write corrections in words.

Which track fits a throat latch jacket?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's sport coat, with the tab shape and storage on his order.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's heritage jacket, with tab, storage and collar fixed on the sealed sample and repeated through the run.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page, and how an approved sample moves into a run on our process page.
