Quick answer: Yarn-dyed suit cloth is coloured in the yarn before weaving, which suits stripes, checks and two-tone effects; piece-dyed cloth is woven first and dyed as a piece, which suits solid plains — the brief should say which the mill ticket describes so shade and pattern expectations match the sample. Copy the mill's dye-route words when you have them, or describe the cloth as patterned yarn-dyed or solid piece-dyed, then approve shade in daylight. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the mill ticket or bunch photo and whether the cloth is patterned or plain on WhatsApp.
This post replaces a skipped FEED idea about what a factory publishes versus quotes per order — that intent is already covered by what the factory site publishes and quote drivers. Here the subject is cloth colour process language a shop can put on a brief without inventing mill claims.
What is the difference between yarn-dyed and piece-dyed?
Yarn-dyed: fibres or yarns are dyed, then woven. Stripes, checks, birdseye effects and pick-and-pick two-tones usually need yarn colour in place before the loom. Piece-dyed: undyed or prepared cloth is dyed after weaving, common for solid plains. Garment-dyed is a third route (colour after make) and is rare for structured suits; if a brand wants it, that is a special programme confirmed on WhatsApp, not assumed.
Process comparison
Yarn-dyed: best for stripes, checks, two-tones and many patterned suitings — risk is pattern match and shade continuity across panels.
Piece-dyed: best for solid plains — risk is assuming a stripe can be piece-dyed the same way.
Garment-dyed: soft casual programmes, uncommon for canvassed suits — construction and trim must survive the dye; confirm on WhatsApp.
What to write on the cloth brief
Ticket words: copy "yarn dyed" / "piece dyed" from the mill ticket when printed.
Look: "solid plain" or "patterned — stripe / check / pick-and-pick".
Matching: for yarn-dyed patterns, say whether panels must match.
Shade check: approve in daylight and shop light; see also metamerism guidance on LIVE posts when comparing linings and trims.
Substitute: whether a piece-dyed plain may replace a yarn-dyed pattern (usually no).
Pick-and-pick as a weave that uses yarn colour is in the pick-and-pick suit fabric brief once you need that weave name. Pattern families such as herringbone are in herringbone suit fabric. Sourcing steps without stock claims are in how to source suit fabric. Cloth inspection before cutting is in four-point fabric inspection.
A worked note
"Brand ref A-12. Cloth: navy chalk stripe, yarn-dyed as mill ticket. Match fronts and trousers. No piece-dyed plain substitute. Sample in final cloth; shade check in daylight."
At the sample
Read the mill ticket with the garment.
Confirm solids look even (piece-dyed) or patterns align (yarn-dyed).
Compare to the bunch under two lights.
Reject a substitute that changes dye route unless you approved it.
Keep a swatch with the sealed sample file.
Why shops ask this question
Sales teams hear "same navy" and assume dye route does not matter. It does when a stripe must match across a jacket and trousers, or when a plain must stay flat without two-tone flicker. Putting yarn-dyed or piece-dyed on the brief gives the factory a clear cloth expectation and gives you a fair sample check. High-twist plains and travel cloths are a separate hand-feel brief in high twist wool suit cloth.
Bulk colourways
If a brand runs the same style in a yarn-dyed stripe and a piece-dyed plain, treat them as separate colourways with separate cloth locks. Do not assume one sealed sample covers both dye routes. Colourway split rules for bulk from 50 are in colourway split rules.
Which track for a dye-route cloth lock?
MTM — from 1 piece: one client's suit with the mill ticket and dye-route note on his order.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's colourway with the dye route and matching rule sealed before bulk from 50.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk cloth programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page, and sample shade approval on our sample policy page.

FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.
Can a piece-dyed plain replace a yarn-dyed stripe for a sample? Not without a written substitute approval; the look and the matching behaviour change.
Is pick-and-pick always yarn-dyed? Pick-and-pick uses coloured weft yarns, so it sits in the yarn-colour family; still copy the mill ticket words when you have them.
