Quick answer: A herringbone suit needs a brief that fixes the chevron direction, says where the pattern must meet, and treats the cloth as one-way so panels do not shade differently. Send the cloth reference and the matching points, check them on the sample, then seal the sample before the run. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the cloth reference and matching points on WhatsApp.
From across a room herringbone looks like a soft, plain texture. Up close it is a broken twill: rows of slanted lines that reverse direction to form a zigzag, or chevron. That structure is why clients like it — it has depth without being loud — and why a herringbone suit can come back looking slightly off. Chevrons that jump at the centre back seam, a sleeve whose zigzag runs a different way from the front, a jacket that looks a shade lighter on one panel: none of these is a fit fault, and none is caught by a standard suit brief.
What is different about herringbone on the cutting table?
Direction. The chevrons point up or down along the length of the cloth. Every panel should be cut the same way.
Shading. Because the twill reverses, light catches the two sides of each chevron differently. Panels cut in opposite directions can look like two shades of the same colour.
Matching. Small herringbones are forgiving; a bold, wide herringbone needs matching at the seams that the eye follows.
Weight range. Herringbone appears in light worsteds and heavy tweeds. Write the weight as printed; the heavy-cloth notes for tweed are in the tweed cloth brief.
The herringbone brief
At a glance
Cloth reference: book, cloth number, composition and weight as printed — herringbones vary by scale and weight.
Scale: small, medium or bold, with a photo next to a ruler — decides how much matching is needed.
Direction: "one-way cut, chevrons pointing up" (or down) — avoids shading between panels.
Centre back: "match the chevron at the centre back seam" — the seam the eye reads first.
Fronts and pockets: pocket flaps matched to the forepart — mismatched flaps stand out on a bold pattern.
Sleeves: sleeve chevrons run the same way as the fronts — sleeves are cut separately and often drift.
Trousers: matched at side seams where visible — keeps the suit reading as one cloth.
Collar and undercollar: note whether the top collar follows the pattern — a small detail on a bold herringbone.
The general matching rules for stripes and checks carry over; see stripe and check matching.
Does matching use more cloth?
It can. A one-way cut and matched seams mean pieces cannot always be turned to fit the lay, so confirm on WhatsApp that the cloth quantity for the order allows for it — especially on a bold herringbone or a client with a large build. Whether a given herringbone can be supplied for your order is also confirmed on the thread.
What to check on the sample
Stand back a few steps in daylight: does any panel look lighter or darker?
Look at the centre back seam and the pocket flaps: do the chevrons meet?
Compare a sleeve with the front: same direction?
Photograph anything off in daylight, square to the camera. How a sample is reviewed and sealed is on our sample policy page.
Colour across a run
Herringbones in mid-tones show lot-to-lot shade differences more than plain navy. If a brand reorders the same cloth, keep the sealed sample as the shade reference; the steps are in fabric lot shade consistency.
Which track does a herringbone order use?
MTM — from 1 piece: a single client's herringbone suit carries the brief on that order; the matching points are checked at the fitting.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label herringbone in a size run puts the direction and matching points on the sealed sample record so every size is cut the same way.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk programmes are described on our suit manufacturer China page.

Is herringbone a business suit cloth? In a small scale and a dark colour, yes; bold herringbones read more casual and country.
Does herringbone need a one-way cut like velvet? It is not a pile cloth, but cutting one way avoids shading, so most briefs ask for it.
Do you hold herringbone cloth? Ask on WhatsApp for each cloth reference. This page lists no cloths.
