Quick answer: A slim client looks best in a suit that follows his frame with a little ease, not in the tightest jacket that will button. Measure as usual, write the notes for chest ease, shoulder, sleeve, seat and leg, and judge the balance on a sample fitting. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the client's measurements and your notes on WhatsApp.
A slim client off the rail has two bad choices. In the size that fits his shoulders, the chest and waist hang in folds. In the size that fits his chest, the shoulders pinch and the sleeves are short. Many end up in a "skinny fit" that pulls across the button when they sit down. Made to measure is the honest answer, but a slim build has its own traps, and the notes on the order decide whether the suit looks tailored or simply tight.
What usually goes wrong on a slim build?
At a glance
Folds below the arms and at the waist: too much chest ease for the frame — write "chest ease: close, not tight".
Shoulders look padded and wide: the house shoulder is wider than the client's — write "natural shoulder width, light or no pad".
Sleeves look like tubes: upper arm wider than the arm needs — write "slim upper arm, keep movement".
X-shaped pull at the button: waist taken in too far — write "waist: follow the body, button without strain".
Seat bags under the jacket: seat cut for a fuller build — seat as measured, plus a "flat seat" note.
Trousers flap at the shin: a straight leg on a thin leg — write the leg shape and opening.
Close is not tight
The most common mistake with slim clients is to treat "slim" as "smaller". A slim man still needs ease to sit, reach and breathe; take it all away and the suit pulls at every movement and looks cheap. Ask the client to sit, reach forward and lift his arms at the fitting. If the jacket pulls at the button or rides up at the collar, it is too close.
Shoulder and sleeve
A natural shoulder with a light pad usually suits a narrow frame better than a structured, extended shoulder, which makes the head look small. The trade-off between soft and structured shoulders is in soft vs structured shoulder. A slimmer sleeve needs the armhole to suit it: a higher, closer armhole lets a narrow sleeve move without lifting the jacket — see high armhole jackets.
Lapel, cloth and layers
A wide lapel on a narrow chest looks heavy; write the lapel width in proportion, as covered in lapel width and gorge height. Cloth with some body — a flannel, a textured worsted — adds a little visual weight, while very light, drapey cloth can cling. A waistcoat also fills the frame well. If the client is also shorter, add the height notes from suits for short men.
At the sample fitting
Client stands relaxed: look for folds under the arms and at the back waist.
Client sits: look for pull at the button and the seat.
Client reaches forward: the back should not strain and the cuffs should not ride far up the arm.
Photograph front, side and back, and send the corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.
Which track fits a slim build?
MTM — from 1 piece: the slim-build notes go on the client's record and every later suit starts from the approved sample.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label brand with a slim cut sets the chest-to-waist drop and shoulder on the sealed sample; how drop is planned across a size run is in the drop size guide.
Size-run planning for a slim cut is covered in suit drop size. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM track is on our made to measure suit factory page.

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Should a skinny client choose a slim-fit suit? He should choose a suit cut to his body. "Slim fit" on the rail is a size pattern; MTM follows his measurements.
Does a light shoulder pad make a slim man look broader? A little, without looking padded. Write the pad choice on the order.
What if the client is between a slim and a regular frame? Measure, write "follow the body", and judge on the sample rather than choosing a label.
