Suits for Short Men: Proportion Notes a Tailor Shop Writes on the MTM Order

Quick answer: A suit for a shorter man works when the proportions are drawn for his height, not when a standard jacket is simply shortened. Measure as usual, then add proportion notes — jacket length, button point, lapel, rise, break and leg line — and judge them together on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the client's height notes and measurements on WhatsApp.

Shorter clients often arrive with the same story: every suit they have bought off the rail looked like it belonged to someone else. The sleeves were shortened, the trousers were hemmed, and still the jacket swallowed him. That is because the proportions — where the button sits, how long the jacket is relative to the leg, how wide the lapel is against a narrower chest — were drawn for a taller body.

Made to measure fixes this, as long as the order says it. The measurements alone tell the factory how big the client is; proportion notes tell it how the suit should read.

What makes a suit look right on a shorter client?

The aim is an unbroken vertical line and a jacket that shows enough leg. In general:

  • A jacket that covers the seat but no more, so the legs do not look short.

  • A button point that keeps the waist where the body's waist is, not lower.

  • A lapel in proportion to the chest, not the house standard.

  • Trousers with little break and a clean leg line, so the length is not lost in folds at the shoe.

The proportion notes

At a glance

  • Jacket length: covers the seat, does not run past it — write "cover seat, no longer" plus the measured length.

  • Button point: at the natural waist — write "button at natural waist" with the measured point.

  • Lapel width: in proportion to the chest — write "narrower than house standard" or as on a reference jacket.

  • Shoulder: clean, not extended past the shoulder bone — write "natural shoulder width, no extension".

  • Trouser rise: mid to high, so the leg starts higher — rise as measured, plus "keep mid-high".

  • Break: little or none — write "slight break" or "no break".

  • Leg line: straight or gentle taper, not wide — write the leg shape and opening.

Each line has its own deeper guide: jacket lengths in short, regular and long jacket lengths, button height in one- and two-button stance, lapel width in lapel width and gorge height, and the leg in trouser leg opening.

Short and slim, or short and stocky?

The notes change with the build. A short, slim client usually wants a closer fit and a slightly higher button. A short, stocky client needs room in the chest and seat without extra length — the temptation is to add length to cover the body, which makes him look shorter. Write "room through the chest, keep length" so the pattern maker does not solve one problem by creating another.

Cloth and colour

Cloth is the client's choice, and none is forbidden. A few general points help a shorter client: a quiet vertical stripe or a plain cloth keeps the line, a large check breaks it, and a matching jacket and trouser reads longer than odd pieces. These are suggestions for the counter, not rules.

A worked note

"Client is shorter with a slim build. Length to cover seat, no longer. Button at natural waist. Lapel narrower than our standard, as reference jacket. Natural shoulder. Trousers: mid-high rise, slight break, gentle taper. Judge all proportions together at the sample fitting."

Which track fits a shorter client?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: proportion notes belong on each client's record; once the sample is approved, later suits start from it.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label brand that wants a short fitting in its run sets the short lengths on the sealed sample and grades them across the size range.

The notes are part of the locked order. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. How the steps run from order to sample to production is on our process page; the MTM track on our made to measure suit factory page.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Should a short man avoid double-breasted jackets? Not necessarily. A double-breasted jacket with a higher button point and a clean length can work; judge it on the sample.

Do you have a separate block for shorter clients? The client's measurements and your notes adjust the base pattern; ask on WhatsApp which base suits your house style.

Can these notes go on a house style for all shorter clients? Yes. Write them once as a house note and reference it on each order.
