Suit Drop Size Explained: Choosing Drop 6, 7 or 8 for a Private-Label Size Run

A customer tries on a 40R jacket. It fits through the chest and shoulders. The trousers that came with it are a 34 waist, and he wears a 32. The store either alters them heavily, splits the suit, or loses the sale. That gap — between jacket chest and trouser waist — is the suit's drop, and on a private-label run it is decided once, at the size chart, for every piece.

Brands buying finished stock inherit somebody else's drop. Brands running their own label choose it. This post is about choosing it deliberately.

What "drop" means

Drop is the difference, in inches, between the jacket chest size and the trouser waist size sold with it. A 40 jacket with a 34 trouser is drop 6. A 40 jacket with a 32 trouser is drop 8. The bigger the drop, the more tapered the body the suit is cut for.

  • Drop 6: a 40 jacket comes with a 34 trouser; classic proportions; often labelled regular or classic.

  • Drop 7: a 40 jacket comes with a 33 trouser; a modern middle; often labelled modern or tailored.

  • Drop 8: a 40 jacket comes with a 32 trouser; broader chest, narrower waist; often labelled slim or athletic.

The label words vary between brands. The number does not, which is why it belongs on your size chart and your order — not "athletic fit" on its own.

Where drop sits in our two tracks

A bulk run is from 50 per style, graded across sizes you approve against a sealed sample — and the drop is part of that grade. An MTM from 1 garment has no drop at all: jacket and trousers are cut to the client's own chest and waist. That is the practical answer for every body your chosen drop does not fit.

The sample for a new style takes 7–14 days. Once the size chart (drop included), cloth and construction are locked, production runs 14–21 days. Production days are not delivery days; freight and customs come on top.

A worked size chart for one style

Here is how one brand's 50-piece run looks under two drops. The jacket curve is the same; the trouser waists follow the drop.

  • 38R, 6 pieces: trouser 32 at drop 6, or 30 at drop 8.

  • 40R, 12 pieces: trouser 34 at drop 6, or 32 at drop 8.

  • 42R, 13 pieces: trouser 36 at drop 6, or 34 at drop 8.

  • 44R, 10 pieces: trouser 38 at drop 6, or 36 at drop 8.

  • 42L, 5 pieces: trouser 36 at drop 6, or 34 at drop 8.

  • 46R, 4 pieces: trouser 40 at drop 6, or 38 at drop 8.

Total: 50 pieces. The brand's own fitting-room notes decided between the two columns: most of its clients needed the trouser taken in, so it chose drop 8 and kept the jacket curve.

How to choose your drop

  1. Read your alteration tickets. If most suits leave the shop with the trouser waist taken in, your current drop is too small. If waists are let out, it is too big.

  2. Look at who buys from you. A store whose clients are mostly gym-going thirty-somethings and a store serving executives in their fifties should not share a drop.

  3. Do not mix drops inside one style. One style, one drop. If you need two, that is two styles on the size chart, each from 50.

  4. Write it as a number. "Drop 7" on the order. Adjectives are for the hang tag.

When drop stops mattering: separates

Some brands avoid the question by selling jacket and trousers as separates — each sized on its own. It solves the drop problem and creates a stock problem: you now hold two size curves. The trade-off is covered in suit separates vs suit. How the grade is built from the sealed sample is in size run grading for bulk from 50, and US/UK/EU size labels in suit size labels for US, UK and EU.

The client your drop does not fit

A 44 chest with a 34 waist is a drop 10. No standard run carries it. The store measures him and sends one MTM order in the same cloth and construction, with the sealed sample named as the reference garment. Our made to measure suit factory page explains that route; bulk programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page.

Can one style be offered in drop 6 and drop 8? Yes, as two styles on the order, each run from 50 per style.

Does MTM have a drop? No. MTM from 1 cuts jacket and trousers to the client's own measurements.
