Quick answer: A self-faced lapel uses the same cloth as the jacket body on the lapel face; a contrast facing uses a different cloth — on day suits self-facing is the default, while shiny satin contrast belongs to dinner jackets and must not be assumed from a tuxedo brief. Write self-faced or name the contrast cloth, and keep evening satin on the tuxedo path. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the facing choice and cloth references on WhatsApp.
A brand asks for "contrast lapels" on a navy day suit and attaches a tuxedo photo. The sample returns with satin facings on a lounge jacket. Self versus contrast on a day suit is a cloth decision; tuxedo satin is an evening system. Evening facings, buttons and braid are in the tuxedo brief.
What does self-faced mean?
Self-faced means the lapel face is the garment cloth — the same navy, grey or chalk-stripe the body uses. Contrast facing means a second cloth on the lapel face: a different colour, a different texture, or, on evening wear, satin or grosgrain. For day suits, self-faced is the usual brief. Contrast on day wear is a fashion choice and must name the second cloth.
Decision table
Self-faced: day suit, blazer and most odd jackets — write "self-faced lapels".
Contrast cloth (day): fashion day jacket — write the contrast cloth reference and colour.
Satin / grosgrain: dinner jacket or tuxedo — use the tuxedo brief, not this day-suit brief.
Velvet collar contrast: overcoat or smoking-adjacent looks — collar contrast is separate from lapel face.
What to lock with the facing line
Peak or notch shape (peak versus notch once published, or your sketch today), lapel width and gorge, and roll (lapel roll line). A contrast facing that is pressed flat can look pasted on; a soft roll needs enough body in the facing cloth.
Spec lines
Day default: "self-faced lapels in garment cloth".
Day contrast: "contrast facing in [cloth reference]; not satin".
Evening: "see tuxedo brief — satin or grosgrain facings".
Collar: undercollar melton colour as separate line when relevant.
A worked note
"Brand ref A-12. Day suit navy worsted. Self-faced notch lapels. Soft roll. No satin. Contrast undercollar melton as house default when already on the trim list."
At the sample
Confirm the lapel face cloth against the body.
If contrast was briefed, check the reference under two lights.
Reject satin on a day brief unless the order was switched to evening.
Check roll and edge thickness.
Photograph lapel face and reverse for the file.
Common mix-ups to catch early
A peak-lapel day suit with satin facings is usually a mis-filed tuxedo request.
A contrast facing in a second worsted colour is still a day jacket if the cloth is matte; name the mill reference.
Grosgrain on a lounge jacket reads evening to most clients — keep it on the dinner circuit unless the brand intentionally sells that look as day fashion and says so on the hangtag story.
Smoking-jacket velvet and frog fastening live on their own GEO/SEO tracks; do not borrow those facings into a standard day-suit brief without a new style code.
Trim lock
Facing cloth, button colour and undercollar melton should be locked together before bulk. A contrast facing with mismatched buttons reads unfinished even when the stitch work is clean. Use the same trim-lock discipline you use for any private-label style.
Which track for a facing decision?
MTM — from 1 piece: one client's day jacket with self or contrast facing named on the order.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's day style with facing cloth sealed before bulk from 50.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. How shops brief day jackets is on our made to measure suit factory page, and sample approval on our sample policy page.
Send the facing choice and cloth references on WhatsApp +65 8013 8838 and we reply with what is still open.
A day-suit facing mistake is expensive because it sits on the most photographed part of the jacket. Spend the extra minute on the brief.
FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Are contrast facings the same as a tuxedo? No. Tuxedo facings are an evening satin or grosgrain system; day contrast is a different cloth on a lounge jacket.
Should a wedding day suit use satin peaks? Satin peaks read as evening; for a day wedding most shops keep self-faced peaks or notches unless the client wants black-tie.
