A custom shop sources cloth one client at a time. A private-label brand sources it one style at a time — and a style is a quantity: bulk runs from 50 pieces per style, across a size run, cut from cloth that has to look the same on every rail. That changes the sourcing question from "can we get this cloth?" to "can we get enough of it, from one lot, at the factory, on a date?"
For the single-client version of this question, see when a client asks for a named mill. This post is the brand-side version.
Four sourcing routes for a bulk style
Route Who buys the cloth What you confirm in writing 1. Factory-held cloth The factory, from cloth it holds Quantity available for the whole style, one lot 2. Factory orders in The factory, from a mill or merchant, for your order Expected arrival date at the factory 3. Nominated supplier You choose the supplier; the cloth is delivered to the factory Who places the order, delivery details, what arrives with the rolls 4. Your own cloth You buy and ship it Quantity to send, arrival check, what happens to remnants
Same routes as a list
Route 1 — factory-held cloth: confirm the quantity for the whole style from one lot.
Route 2 — factory orders in for your run: confirm the expected arrival date at the factory.
Route 3 — nominated supplier: you choose the supplier and the cloth goes to the factory; confirm who orders, delivery details and the paperwork with the rolls.
Route 4 — your own cloth: you buy and ship; confirm quantity, arrival check and remnants.
Quantity: plan from the size split, not from a per-suit figure
A "metres per suit" figure is a starting point for one garment. A bulk style needs the factory's cloth quantity for your size split — larger sizes use more, pattern matching adds more, and some cloth is lost in cutting. Send the size split with the cloth request and ask for the total in writing. Size splits are explained in size-run grading from 50.
Lot: one style, one lot where possible
Cloth is dyed and finished in lots, and lots can differ slightly in shade. For a style that will hang together on a rail, ask for the whole quantity from one lot, and ask what happens if it cannot be. Reorders raise the same question months later; see fabric lot shade consistency.
Paperwork that should travel with the rolls (Routes 2–4)
Packing list with roll or piece numbers and lengths.
Article reference, colour and lot on each roll ticket.
Any test reports you required from the supplier, such as colour fastness — see colour fastness tests before ordering.
When the bulk clock starts
On every route the clock is the same: production 14–21 days after cloth, construction and size specs are locked, and after the style's sample has been approved (a sample takes 7–14 days). On Routes 2, 3 and 4, "cloth locked" means the cloth is at the factory and checked — its journey sits in front of the clock. Production days are not delivery days. The dual-clock picture is in cloth stock vs mill order.
Worked example (illustrative)
A brand plans a navy two-piece style: 60 pieces across six sizes. It nominates a cloth supplier (Route 3).
Brand sends the style, size split and cloth reference.
Factory replies in writing with the total cloth quantity for that split.
Brand orders that quantity from one lot, delivered to the factory, with roll tickets.
Cloth arrives and is checked; trims and size specs are confirmed; sample approved.
Production runs 14–21 days from that lock.
MTM from 1 alongside the line
Many private-label brands also take made-to-order client orders. Those run as MTM from 1 and can draw on the same cloth if quantity was planned for them. Say so in the request. Bulk programmes are described on our private label suit manufacturer page; where cloth checks sit is on our process page.

FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked.
Can we nominate our own cloth supplier? Yes, as Route 3; confirm in writing who places the order and how the rolls are delivered and labelled.
Who decides how much cloth to order? Ask the factory for the total in writing for your size split before you order.
Does a nominated supplier change the clock? It moves the start: production 14–21 days runs after the cloth has arrived and the order is locked.
