Worsted vs Woolen Suit Cloth: What Changes in the Brief and on the Sample

Quick answer: Worsted cloth is smooth, crisp and holds a sharp line; woolen cloth is soft, lofty and textured, and the brief should name which one the client wants before the sample. Write the yarn type with the cloth reference, add the pressing and construction notes that follow from it, and judge hand and drape on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the cloth reference and the look you want on WhatsApp.

Two navy suits sit side by side. Same colour, similar weight. One has a clean, smooth face, a sharp trouser crease and a slight sheen. The other is soft to the hand, a little fuzzy, and the crease is rounder. A client who wanted the second and got the first will say the suit "feels cheap" or "feels stiff", though nothing is wrong with either. The difference is in the yarn: worsted or woolen.

What is the difference between worsted and woolen suits?

It starts before weaving. For worsted yarn the wool fibres are combed so they lie parallel, then spun tightly. The yarn is smooth and strong, and the cloth has a clear weave and a crisp hand. For woolen yarn the fibres are carded but not combed, so they lie every which way and the yarn is loose and lofty. The cloth is soft, warm and textured, and the weave is often hidden under a fuzzy surface. Most business suiting is worsted; flannels, tweeds and many winter cloths are woolen or have a woolen character.

Side by side

  • Surface: worsted — smooth, clear weave; woolen — soft, fuzzy, weave often hidden.

  • Hand: worsted — crisp and firm; woolen — soft and lofty.

  • Crease: worsted holds a sharp crease; woolen gives a rounder crease.

  • Shine: worsted can shine if over-pressed; woolen rarely shines, but the nap can flatten.

  • Season: worsted — every season, depending on weight; woolen — mostly autumn and winter.

  • Pattern: stripes and fine patterns read clearly on worsted, softer on woolen.

  • Best for: worsted — business suits, travel and formal wear; woolen — country suits, odd jackets and winter suits.

Which should the client choose?

Ask how and where he will wear the suit. A client who sits in meetings, travels and wants a sharp crease is a worsted client; the travel-specific notes are in high-twist wool for travel. A client who wants a soft, warm suit for winter or the country is a woolen client; flannel is the classic case, covered in flannel construction notes, and heavy woolens in the tweed brief. Fibre fineness is a separate axis from yarn type; see Super S wool fineness.

What changes on the factory side?

  • Pressing. Worsted needs a press cloth and care to avoid shine; woolen needs care not to flatten the nap.

  • Seams and edges. Worsted shows a crisp edge; woolen edges look softer and bulk at seams can show, so thick woolens may need notes on seam pressing.

  • Pattern matching. Clear worsted stripes need matching at the seams the eye follows; on soft woolens the pattern is less exact.

  • Construction. A lofty woolen pairs well with a softer front; a crisp worsted takes structure easily. Write the construction with the cloth.

The brief lines

  • Cloth reference: book, cloth number, composition and weight as printed.

  • Yarn type: "worsted" or "woolen" — or "as cloth reference" if the merchant states it.

  • Look wanted: "smooth and crisp" or "soft, textured".

  • Pressing: "press with a cloth, keep the surface" (worsted) or "do not flatten the nap" (woolen).

  • Crease: sharp or soft trouser crease.

  • Swatch approval: client signs off the swatch in daylight before the sample; see cloth swatch approval.

Whether a given cloth can be supplied for your order is confirmed on WhatsApp.

At the sample

Hold the sample in daylight and feel the cloth against the swatch. Check the crease, the lapel roll and the seams, and look at the surface at an angle for shine or flattened nap. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track fits each cloth?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: a client's worsted or woolen suit carries the yarn type and pressing note on that order.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label line sets the yarn type, pressing note and crease on the sealed sample; bulk cloth planning is on our suit manufacturer China page.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk programmes are on our suit manufacturer China page.

Is worsted better than woolen? Neither is better; they do different jobs. Worsted is crisp and smooth, woolen soft and warm.

Is flannel worsted or woolen? Both exist. Woolen flannel is softer and fuzzier; worsted flannel is smoother and holds a crease better.

Can a worsted suit be worn in winter? Yes, in a heavier weight. Yarn type and cloth weight are separate choices.
