Suit Monogram on an MTM Order: Location, Initials and the Line on the Order Form

Clients like a monogram because it makes the suit theirs. Shops like it because it is a small, personal detail that costs the client a moment of thought at the counter. It is also one of the easiest details to get wrong in transit between the shop and the factory: initials in the wrong order, capitals where the client wanted small letters, dots that nobody asked for, or a monogram on the cuff when the client meant inside the pocket.

This post covers the usual locations, how to write the initials, and the single line that should go on every MTM order with a monogram.

Where a suit monogram usually goes

  • Inside breast pocket, on the lining: seen by the wearer — the most common and discreet choice.

  • Inside the jacket, on the facing or lining near the hem: seen by the wearer — room for longer text or a date.

  • Inside trouser waistband: seen by the wearer — useful when trousers are worn separately.

  • Under the collar: seen by anyone who looks closely — discreet but visible when the collar is turned.

  • Sleeve cuff, outside: seen by everyone — a visible choice; confirm the client wants it seen.

Which locations, thread colours and stitch methods are available for a given order is confirmed on WhatsApp; this page lists the usual choices, not a menu.

Writing the initials

Initials are where most mistakes happen. Traditional monograms sometimes put the surname initial in the middle, larger; other clients want first, middle, last in a row. Never let the factory guess. Write exactly what should be stitched, in the order it should appear:

  • Characters: J R S, or JRS, or J.R.S. — exactly as stitched.

  • Case: capitals or small letters.

  • Order: left to right as it should read.

  • Dots or spaces: say "no dots" if none.

Ask the client to check the line before you send it. A monogram is personal data on a garment, so keep it to what is needed; how much client data an order should carry is covered in client data minimisation on the measurement sheet.

The order line

One line, every time, on the order form:

MONOGRAM: "JRS" · capitals · no dots · inside breast pocket lining · thread colour as on trim card · method confirmed on thread

If there is no monogram, write "MONOGRAM: none". An empty field invites a question; "none" closes it.

A worked mistake

A client asked for his initials, John Robert Smith. The shop wrote "initials JRS, traditional". Traditional was read as the larger surname letter in the middle, and the monogram came back J S R. Nobody was wrong; the line was. Written as "JRS, left to right, same size" it would have been right the first time.

Monogram, lining and your label

A monogram is the client's; the label is yours. Keep them apart on the order so one does not replace the other. Personalised linings are a separate brief, covered in a personalised lining brief, and where your shop label goes in label placement on the sealed sample.

MTM and bulk

Monograms belong to MTM from 1: one client, one set of initials. On bulk from 50 per style, a brand mark stitched inside every jacket is a trim, approved on the sealed sample like the label. Either way, the monogram is part of the locked order. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. How the steps run after the order is confirmed is on our process page; the MTM track on our made to measure suit factory page.

Can the monogram be added after the suit is made? Ask on the thread; it is simpler to include it on the order.

Can we use a script font? Ask on WhatsApp which lettering is available for the order.

Does a monogram change the clock? It is part of the order lock; once the order is locked the published clocks apply.
