Seersucker is the warm-weather suit clients ask for by name: the striped, crinkled cloth that looks relaxed and wears cool. Its character comes from the weave — some yarns are woven slack, so the cloth gathers into puckered stripes that hold off the skin. That same pucker is what a factory can destroy in one heavy press, and what an ordinary suit brief never mentions.
This post is the brief a tailor shop or private-label brand sends so the seersucker comes back looking like seersucker.
What makes seersucker different on the table
The pucker: pressed flat, it does not come back fully. The pressing note is the most important line.
Stripes: usually vertical, often narrow; matching at seams and pockets shows.
Shrinkage: cotton seersucker may shrink when washed or steamed; ask about the cloth before cutting.
Weight: light, so heavy linings and stiff interlinings show through and fight the drape.
Composition varies — cotton is common, blends exist — so write it as printed on the swatch, not as "seersucker".
The seersucker brief
Cloth reference: book, cloth number, composition and weight as printed — seersuckers differ by yarn and weave.
Pressing: "keep the pucker: light steam, no flat press on the face" — a flat press removes the texture.
Construction: unlined, half lined or fully lined, with a soft front — light cloth wants light construction.
Lining: lightweight, colour as on the trim card — heavy lining shows through.
Interlining: light, discussed on the thread — stiff fusing flattens the pucker.
Stripe matching: at centre back, pockets and sleeves — stripes show every mismatch.
Shrinkage: ask whether the cloth needs pre-treatment — avoids a garment that shrinks at first steam.
Care line: what the client is told — seersucker forgives creases but not flat ironing.
Construction for a light, textured cloth
Most seersucker jackets are made unlined or half lined with a soft front; the choice is written on the order. Check the sample for these four things
Is the pucker intact on the fronts and sleeves, or pressed flat at the edges?
Do the stripes meet at centre back and line up on the pockets?
Does the lining show through or drag?
After a light steam in the shop, did anything shrink or pull?

Plan before the warm season
Seersucker sells in a short window. Work back from when the client or your shop floor needs the garment and allow for cloth arrival, then the factory clock, then shipping. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days.
