Look at a soft-shouldered jacket from the side and the breast pocket often gives it away: instead of a straight welt, the opening curves gently and rises toward the arm, like the hull of a small boat. That is the barchetta pocket. For a private-label brand it is a small, visible signature — and one of the details most likely to come back different if it is written as a single word on the tech pack.
This post explains what the barchetta is, how it differs from a straight welt, and the spec card that keeps it identical across a size run.
Barchetta or straight welt
Straight welt: a rectangular welt, usually set at a slight angle. Clean, familiar, easy to grade.
Barchetta: the welt curves, lower at the centre and rising at the ends, with the outer end often higher. It follows the curve of the chest and reads as softer.
Neither is better. The barchetta suits a softer jacket with a natural shoulder; the straight welt suits a cleaner, more structured look. What matters for a brand is choosing one and writing it so it cannot be read two ways. Where the pocket sits within a jacket tier is covered in half canvas vs fused entry tier.
The spec card
Shape: barchetta or straight (example: barchetta).
Welt width: at the centre and at each end (example: narrower at the ends than the centre).
Opening length: finished, in one unit (example: set on the sample, in cm).
Rise: how much higher the outer end sits (example: "outer end higher, as on sample").
Placement: from the shoulder point down and from centre front across (example: measured on the base size).
Stripe or check: matched to the forepart or not (example: matched vertically).
Pocket bag: material as on the trim card.
Grading: which values scale with size (example: placement grades, welt shape fixed).
Grading is where it goes wrong
On one sample the barchetta looks right. Across a size run two things can drift: the placement, if it is not graded with the chest, and the curve, if each size is drawn by hand. Decide which values scale and which stay fixed, and write it on the card. Most brands keep the welt shape and width fixed and let placement move with the chest. Stripes make this harder; matching rules for striped cloth are in stripe and check matching.
Lock it on the sample
The barchetta is approved on the sealed sample like any other detail: photograph it square-on and from the side, note the measured values, and write "as on sealed sample" on the bulk order. Other pocket choices for the same jacket — flap, jetted or patch hip pockets — are compared in flap, jetted and patch pockets. How a sample is sealed is on our sample policy page.
MTM and bulk
On MTM from 1, the barchetta is a house detail: write it once in the house style note and every client order carries it. On bulk from 50 per style, the card above goes into the tech pack and the sealed sample record, and every size is checked against it. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk programmes are described on our suit manufacturer China page.

Can a barchetta pocket go on a fused jacket? It can be discussed for the order; confirm on the thread for the construction and cloth you choose.
Does a barchetta pocket hold a pocket square differently? The curve shows a little more of the square at the outer end; many brands like that.
Is the barchetta reserved for bespoke jackets? No. It is a pocket shape; whether it suits your jacket is a style decision.
