Western tailoring has a steady market: country weddings, stage wear, rodeo and ranch events, and brands that build a collection around it. In the US it is its own category, and custom clothiers there get requests for it every season. A western suit jacket is a suit jacket in its cut, with shaped yokes, piped edges and decorative pockets added on top. Those details are where samples fail: yoke points that do not meet at the shoulder seam, piping that waves along a curve, and smile pockets that look stuck on.
What makes a suit jacket "western"?
The details, more than the cut. Common features:
Yokes: shaped panels across the upper front and back, with pointed, curved or scalloped edges.
Smile pockets: curved, jetted pockets with arrow tacks or embroidered tips at the corners.
Piping: a narrow contrast or self-colour edge along the yokes, collar or pockets.
Collar and lapel: a contrast collar, a narrow notch or a shawl; some brands use suede-look or other trims.
Fit: usually close and fairly short, so it works with a belt buckle and boots.
The details, and what to write
Front yoke: pointed, curved or scalloped — write shape and depth, with a reference photo.
Back yoke: matches the front or simpler — write "back yoke to meet front at shoulder seam".
Smile pockets: jetted curve with arrow tacks — write curve, width and tack colour.
Piping: self or contrast colour — write colour and where it runs.
Collar: self, contrast cloth or trim — write material and colour.
Buttons: horn-look, metal or snap-look — write type, colour and count.
Length: short to regular — written to the client or the size run.
Trousers: matching, flat front, boot-cut — write the leg and opening for boots.
Where do western jacket samples go wrong?
Yoke points miss the seam. Front and back yokes should meet at the shoulder seam at the same depth. Write it, and ask for both sides to be checked against each other.
Piping waves. Curved piping needs to be eased round the curve; on a tight scallop it can ripple. Ask to see the curves close up on the sample.
Smile pockets gape. A curved jetted pocket can open when the client moves; a small tack or a stay behind it keeps it closed.
Patterned cloth fights the yoke. On checks or stripes, decide whether the yoke is matched to the body or cut on a different angle, and write it. Pattern matching is covered in stripe and check matching.
Too many details at once. Yokes, piping, embroidery and contrast collar together can look like costume. Pick the details the brand stands for.

Which cloths and trims?
Gabardine is the classic western suiting, because it is firm, smooth and holds the shape of the yokes; see the gabardine brief. Worsted twill and suiting in plain colours also work well.
