Customers open a jacket before they buy it. They look at the lining, the inside pockets, the label. For a private-label brand, the interior is the part of the garment a competitor's jacket cannot copy at a glance — and piping is one of the simplest ways to make it recognisably yours.
Piping is a narrow strip, often a folded bias strip or a cord covered in fabric, sewn into a seam so a fine line of colour shows. On a suit jacket it appears in a few predictable places. This post covers where, what to decide, and an interior spec card to put on the order.
Where piping goes on a jacket interior
Facing-to-lining seam: a line of colour where the front facing meets the body lining; matching or contrast.
Inside breast pocket mouths: frames the jetted inside pockets; same as the facing piping, or self-cloth.
Exposed seams on an unlined or half-lined jacket: binds raw seam edges cleanly, often called a bound seam; matching the lining or a signature colour.
Hanger loop and label surround: small accents near the neck; matching the facing piping.
Not every jacket needs all four. Many brands pick one signature location — usually the facing-to-lining seam — and keep the rest quiet.
Piping on half-lined and unlined jackets
On a fully lined jacket, piping is decoration. On a half-lined or unlined jacket, it is often structural too: the exposed seams have to be finished somehow, and binding them is the cleanest way. If your summer line is half-lined, the binding colour is a visible decision, not a detail to leave to the factory. Lining coverage choices are covered in unlined and half-lined jacket briefs.
The interior spec card
Body lining: colour and type, by trim card reference.
Sleeve lining: same as body, or a different colour or stripe.
Piping location(s): from the table above.
Piping colour: match lining, match cloth, or contrast — with a swatch or trim card reference.
Piping style: flat strip or corded, in words; ask for both on a trim card if unsure.
Inside pockets: count and which are piped.
Labels: main label position and any size or care label placement.
What materials are available for lining and piping is confirmed against a trim card for your brief; this page makes no supplier claims. General lining and shoulder pad specs are in lining and shoulder pad specs, personalised linings in custom suit lining briefs, and locking trims before a run in button and trim lock before bulk.
Seal it on the sample
Piping colour is judged on the garment, not on a swatch: a contrast that looks bold on a card can disappear against a dark lining, or shout against a pale one. Approve it on the sample, in daylight, with the lining it will sit against. Sealing is described on our sample policy page.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days.
Bulk and MTM
On bulk from 50 per style, the interior spec is sealed once and repeats across the run, so a brand's signature appears on every jacket. On MTM from 1, a shop can offer piping as a client option — "house piping" or a contrast chosen at the fitting — written on each order. Bulk programmes are on our private label suit manufacturer page.
A worked spec (illustrative)
A young brand with a navy-and-grey range wants one memorable detail. It chooses a narrow, flat piping in a muted burgundy at the facing-to-lining seam and round both inside breast pockets, with a grey body lining and a striped sleeve lining. The first sample shows the burgundy nearly vanishing against grey under shop lights, so the brand moves one shade brighter on the trim card and re-approves. Every jacket in the run then opens the same way.

FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.
Does piping add to the sample time? The sample runs on its usual window once the spec is locked; confirm trim availability on the thread first.
Can MTM clients choose their own piping colour? Yes, as an option written on each order, from the trims confirmed for your brief.
Is piping the same as a bound seam? Related. Piping is a decorative line in a seam; binding wraps a raw seam edge. Half-lined jackets often use both.
