Elbow patches began as repairs and became a style. On a tweed or corduroy sport coat they signal a certain kind of jacket — country, academic, relaxed — and brands building an odd-jacket range often want them on at least one style. They look like the simplest detail on the garment. They are also one of the easiest to get wrong, because a patch that sits even slightly above or below the elbow is the first thing anyone notices.
This post covers the four decisions behind an elbow patch — shape, material, placement and attachment — and how they differ between made-to-measure coats and a graded bulk run.
The four decisions
Shape: oval, rounded rectangle or a custom outline; write the shape and finished size, with a drawing or photo.
Material: suede-type, leather-type, corduroy, knit or self-cloth; write it by trim card reference, plus colour.
Placement: centred on the elbow point, measured from the shoulder or the cuff; write the distance from a fixed point, per size or per client.
Attachment: edge-stitched visible, or a cleaner turned edge; describe it in words, with a reference photo if you have one.
Which materials are available for your brief is confirmed against a trim card on the order thread; this page makes no supplier claims.
Placement is the hard part
The elbow point moves with arm length. A patch placed for a regular sleeve sits too high on a long-armed client and too low on a short one. And the elbow is not at the visual middle of the sleeve; it is closer to the cuff than many people expect.
On MTM from 1: the shop marks the elbow point on the client — arm bent, a pin or chalk at the point of the elbow — and writes its distance from the shoulder point or from the finished cuff. Write which reference you used. That single number does more than any description.
On bulk from 50 per style: placement is set on the sealed sample and graded with sleeve length across sizes and lengths. Ask for the patch position to be checked on more than one size, not just the sample size, and say so on the order. Graded lengths are covered in short, regular and long jacket lengths.
Cloth and patch together
A patch reads differently on different cloths. A dark suede-type patch on a mid-brown tweed is a classic pairing; the same patch on a smooth navy cloth looks like a costume. Approve the pairing on the sample, in daylight. Heavy-cloth briefs are covered in tweed and heavy cloth briefs, and the rest of an odd jacket's sample points in sport coat sample points. If the coat also carries interior piping, keep the colour story consistent with the lining piping spec.
The clocks
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. A patch decision left open — material not confirmed, placement not marked — keeps the order from being locked, so settle it at the brief.
A worked spec (illustrative)
A brand adds a tweed sport coat to its range as a bulk style.
Shape: rounded oval, finished size from the brand's drawing
Material: suede-type, dark brown, trim card reference attached
Placement: centred on the elbow point; distance from shoulder point set on the 40R sample and graded with sleeve length
Attachment: visible edge stitch in matching thread
Check: patch position on the 38S, 40R and 44L before bulk continues
The sample comes back with the patch a touch high on the 44L. The brand flags it with one photo, the grade is corrected, and the run proceeds.

FAQ
What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.
Where exactly should an elbow patch sit? Centred on the point of the elbow with the arm bent. Measure it on the client for MTM, and check it on several sizes for bulk.
Can elbow patches go on a suit jacket? It is unusual on a suit; most brands keep them for sport coats and odd jackets.
Can MTM clients add patches to a coat they already ordered? Before the order is locked, yes, as a change in writing. After cutting, ask on the thread.
