Wool Gabardine Suits: A Cloth Brief Against Shine and Seam Pucker

Quick answer: Wool gabardine makes a smooth, hard-wearing suit, but its tight, steep twill shows shine from heavy pressing and pucker at the seams, so the brief must say how to press and sew it. Write the cloth reference, a pressing note and a seam note, then check the sample in angled light before it is sealed. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the cloth reference and your pressing note on WhatsApp.

Gabardine is a tightly woven twill with a steep diagonal rib, usually in worsted wool for suiting. It has a smooth face, a firm hand and a clean drape, and it sheds light rain and dust better than many suitings. Clients choose it for a sharp, quiet suit — and for trousers that keep a crease. The same tight, smooth face is what shows a factory's mistakes: a heavy press leaves a shine, a tight stitch puckers a seam, and both catch the light.

Is gabardine a good material for a suit?

For many uses, yes. In general it wears well, holds a crease, drapes cleanly and resists light weather. It is less forgiving than a textured cloth: marks, pressing shine and uneven seams show, and it can feel warm in hot climates. Chosen for the right client and briefed properly, it is a reliable suit cloth.

Where gabardine goes wrong

At a glance

  • Pressing shine: glossy patches on seams, edges and pockets — write "press with a cloth, no direct iron on the face".

  • Seam pucker: seams ripple instead of lying flat — write "seams flat, stitch tension suited to tight twill".

  • Twill direction: panels catch light differently — write "twill running the same way on all panels".

  • Edge imprint: the seam allowance shows through as a ridge — write "light press over seam allowances".

  • Crease: trousers too soft or too sharp — write the crease instruction as agreed.

Pressed and chemically set trouser creases are compared in durable trouser creases. Pressing notes for a very different cloth — where the aim is to keep texture rather than avoid shine — are in the seersucker brief.

The gabardine brief

  • Cloth reference: book, cloth number, composition, weight as printed.

  • Construction: fused, half canvas or full canvas — confirmed per order.

  • Lining: type and colour as on the trim card; trousers lined to the knee or not.

  • Pressing: "press with a cloth, no shine; light press over seam allowances".

  • Seams: "flat, no pucker" — check on the sample.

  • Twill direction: "all panels cut the same way".

  • Crease: sharp, soft or as on sample.

Whether a given gabardine can be supplied for your order is confirmed on WhatsApp.

Gabardine and herringbone are both twills

Both cloths are built on a twill, but they behave differently on the table: herringbone reverses the twill and needs matching, gabardine runs one steep twill and needs careful pressing. If a client is choosing between them, the herringbone notes are in the herringbone cloth brief.

Check the sample in angled light

  1. Hold the jacket under a window so light falls across it: any shiny patches at seams, pocket welts or edges?

  2. Run a hand along the side seams and sleeve seams: flat, or rippled?

  3. Look at the trousers from the side: is the crease where you asked?

  4. Report anything off with a photo in angled light. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track does a gabardine order use?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: single client gabardine suits carry the brief on each order.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label gabardine suit or trouser in a size run seals the pressing and seam notes on the sample record.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. Bulk programmes are described on our suit manufacturer China page.

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. What is a gabardine suit? A suit made in gabardine, a tightly woven twill with a steep diagonal rib; for suits it is usually worsted wool.

Is gabardine warm? It is dense, so it can feel warmer than an open weave of the same weight. For hot markets, discuss a lighter or more open cloth.

Can shine from pressing be removed? Sometimes partly, by a skilled presser. Preventing it with the pressing note is far easier.
