Corduroy Suits Under Your Label: Wale, Pile Direction and What to Check on the Sample

Corduroy suits have moved from niche to regular autumn stock for many brands: softer than a worsted suit, smarter than a chore jacket, and easy to sell in earthy colours. Corduroy is a cotton pile cloth, woven with raised cords (wales), and the pile is what makes it look rich — and what makes it unforgiving. Pile direction, pressing and cloth weight decide whether the finished suit looks expensive or patchy.

Wale and weight

  • Wide wale: bold, casual, heavier. Strong for jackets; can feel bulky as trousers.

  • Medium (often called standard) wale: the usual choice for suits.

  • Fine or needlecord: smoother, lighter, dressier.

Write the wale count per inch and the weight as stated by the mill in the brief, plus composition — some corduroys include elastane for stretch.

Pile direction: cut one way

Pile catches light differently depending on direction. Brushed one way it looks lighter; the other way, deeper and richer. Every panel of the garment has to be cut in the same direction, or the jacket front and sleeves will look like different colours. That one-way layout uses more cloth than a plain worsted, so confirm the quantity in writing. The same principle applies to velvet, covered in the velvet pile brief.

Brief fields for a corduroy suit

Field What to write Cloth Reference, wale count, weight, composition Pile direction Your preference: pile up (deeper colour) or pile down Construction Ask what suits the cloth; many corduroy jackets are soft-built Lining Half or unlined is common for a softer jacket Pressing note Ask how pile crush and shine will be avoided Trousers Rise, front style, hem finish

Same fields as a list

  • Cloth: reference, wale count, weight, composition.

  • Pile direction: pile up (deeper) or pile down.

  • Construction: ask what suits the cloth; often soft-built.

  • Lining: half or unlined is common.

  • Pressing note: ask how pile crush and shine are avoided.

  • Trousers: rise, front style, hem finish.

What to check on the sample

  1. Colour match between jacket front, sleeves, back and trousers in daylight — the pile-direction test.

  2. Pressing marks: flattened pile at seams, pocket flaps or lapel edges.

  3. Seam bulk on wide wale.

  4. Wale alignment at the front edge and centre back.

  5. Shrinkage behaviour: ask how the cotton cloth was treated before cutting; our pre-shrinking questions apply here too.

Send photos as in our sample feedback photo set. Our sample policy explains how an approved sample becomes the bulk reference.

Clocks and tracks

Corduroy runs on our standard clocks: sample 7–14 days, production 14–21 days, counted after measurements or size specs, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days, and autumn ranges should work back from the in-store date.

A stocked corduroy style runs as bulk from 50 per style once the sample is sealed; plan colours with colourway split rules. Shops can test a colour first on MTM from 1 client orders. Our private label suit manufacturer page covers bulk programmes.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked.

Is corduroy hard to make into a suit? It needs one-way cutting and careful pressing; the clocks are the same as other suits.

Which wale is best for a suit? Medium wale is the usual choice; fine wale is dressier, wide wale more casual.

Does corduroy need more cloth? Usually yes, because every panel is cut in one pile direction; ask for the quantity in writing.
