Quick answer: A bouclé jacket is cut from cloth woven with looped yarn, so the surface is soft and textured, and the brief has to cover seams, edges, buttonholes and pressing, because the loops snag, stretch and flatten more easily than a smooth wool. Write the cloth reference and composition, ask for stabilised edges and gentle pressing, choose a soft construction and judge the surface, seams and edges on the sample. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the cloth reference and a daylight swatch photo on WhatsApp.
Bouclé has moved from womenswear into men's sport coats and casual jackets. The cloth is woven from yarn spun with small loops, which gives a nubby, three-dimensional surface that looks warm and relaxed. Clients choose it from a swatch because it feels different from anything else on the rail. On the cutting table it behaves differently too, and a factory that treats it like a plain worsted can return a sample with pulled loops at the seams, wavy front edges and a flattened surface.
What is a bouclé jacket, and why is it different to make?
It is a jacket in a cloth whose yarn carries small loops or curls. The loops give texture and softness, but they also catch on hooks, Velcro and bag straps, they make seams bulkier, and the loose surface stretches more along the edges. The cloth is often wool or a wool blend, sometimes mixed with other fibres for colour and effect; the composition on the cloth reference tells you which.
Bouclé against other jacket cloths

| Surface | Looped, textured | Flat, smooth | Rough, firm |
| Seams | Bulkier; loops can pull | Clean | Firm, clean |
| Edges | Stretch easily | Stable | Stable |

| Pressing | Gentle; loops flatten | Normal | Normal |
| Construction | Soft, light | Any | Medium to firm |
Same table as a list
- Surface: bouclé — looped and textured; worsted — flat and smooth; tweed — rough and firm.
- Seams: bouclé — bulkier, loops can pull; worsted — clean; tweed — firm and clean.
- Edges: bouclé — stretch easily; worsted and tweed — stable.
- Snagging: bouclé — catches easily; worsted and tweed — low.
- Pressing: bouclé — gentle, because the loops flatten; worsted and tweed — normal.
- Construction: bouclé — soft and light; worsted — any; tweed — medium to firm.
Tweed has its own notes in the tweed brief, and open-weave blazer cloth in the hopsack brief.
Where does a bouclé jacket go wrong?
- Loops pulled at the seams. Ask for seams sewn and pressed with care, and check them on the sample from the outside.
- Front edges stretched. A tape along the front edges and roll line holds them; tapes and fusing are explained in interlining and tape specs.
- Surface flattened by pressing. Low heat, steam lifted off, no heavy press.
- Buttonholes fraying the loops. The buttonhole finish is tried on a cloth swatch before the jacket is made.
- A heavy build. A stiff front and big shoulder fight a soft cloth; see soft or structured shoulder.
The brief lines
- Cloth reference: book, number and composition as printed, with a daylight photo; see cloth swatch approval.
- Construction: soft front, light or no pad, half or full lining.
- Edges: "tape front edges and roll line".
- Seams: "sew and press without pulling loops".
- Pressing: "low heat, lift steam, keep texture".
- Pockets: patch pockets suit the look and avoid cutting the surface for jetted openings.
- Lining: smooth, so the jacket slides over a knit.
- Buttonholes: finish agreed on a swatch test.
The jacket style itself follows the sport coat sample points. Which bouclé cloths can be supplied for your order is confirmed on WhatsApp.
What should the client be told?
Bouclé catches. A short line at the order saves a complaint: keep it away from Velcro and rough bag straps, brush it lightly, and expect some loops to lift with wear. Textured cloths can also pill where they rub; see pilling and briefing clients on fine cloth wear.
A worked note
"Client ref A-12. Sport coat in bouclé, cloth reference and daylight photo attached. Soft front, no pad, half lined. Tape front edges and roll line. Sew and press without pulling loops; low heat, lift steam. Patch pockets. Buttonhole finish per swatch test. Horn-look buttons."
At the sample
- In daylight: is the surface even, with no flattened patches?
- Seams from the outside: any pulled loops or puckers?
- Front edges: straight, not wavy?
- Buttonholes: clean, no loose loops?
- Photograph front, back and close-ups of seams and edges; write corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.
Which track fits a bouclé jacket?
- MTM — from 1 piece: one client's bouclé jacket, with the edge, seam and pressing notes on his order.
- Bulk — from 50 per style: a brand's bouclé jacket in a size run, with the construction and pressing fixed on the sealed sample and the same cloth reference planned for the run.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM route for shops is on our made to measure suit factory page.
