White Tie Tailcoat: Brief and Sample Points for Coat, Waistcoat and Trousers

Quick answer: A white tie tailcoat is cut short at the front and long at the back, and it works when coat, waistcoat and trousers are briefed together so the lines meet at the waist. Send a reference photo, the measurements and the parts list below, check the length lines on the sample, and seal it before the final cloth is cut. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the reference photo and measurements on WhatsApp.

White tie is the most formal evening dress code: state dinners, certain balls, some orchestras and ceremonies. The clothes are fixed by convention, and the eye knows them well, so small mistakes show. Tails that end too high or too low. A white waistcoat that peeps out below the front of the coat. Trousers that sit too low, leaving shirt showing at the waist. A tailcoat can be well made and still look wrong if the three pieces are not drawn to meet each other.

What is a white tie tailcoat?

An evening coat in black or midnight blue, cut away square at the waist in front and falling to tails at the back, usually to around the back of the knee. It is double-breasted in style but not made to close; it is worn open. The lapels are peaked and faced in silk. It is worn with a white waistcoat, high-waisted trousers with braid down the side seams, a white wing-collar shirt and a white bow tie. The shirt and tie are usually sourced separately; this brief covers coat, waistcoat and trousers.

Parts and what to write

Same table as a list

  • Coat front: cut away square at the waist and worn open — write "front ends at natural waist; open, buttons decorative".

  • Tails: long at the back — write "tails to back of knee" or as reference.

  • Lapels: peak, silk-faced — write facing type and colour; see the tuxedo facing notes.

  • Waistcoat: white, low-cut, ending above the coat front — write "waistcoat not to show below coat front".

  • Trousers: high rise, braces, side braid — write "high rise, brace buttons, double braid" or "single braid".

  • Hem: no turn-ups, slight or no break — write "plain hem, slight break".

The length lines that must meet

Three lines decide whether a tailcoat looks right, and all three sit around the waist:

  1. Coat front ends at the natural waist.

  2. Waistcoat ends just above that line, so no white shows below the coat.

  3. Trouser waistband sits at or above the natural waist, so no shirt shows between waistcoat and trousers.

Measure the natural waist once and write all three pieces against it, rather than taking separate measurements for each. A high trouser rise is the usual answer; see trouser rise and seat ease. Braces hold the trousers at that height; how brace buttons are written is in brace buttons inside or outside.

Facings, buttons and braid

Facings and covered buttons are briefed as for a dinner suit; the details are in the tuxedo brief. On tailcoat trousers the braid is often doubled. Black or midnight blue cloth is a choice for evening light; see midnight blue vs black. The waistcoat is a separate garment with its own points — front, back and adjuster — as in waistcoat sample points, with the white cloth and lapels agreed on the swatch.

Tailcoat or morning coat?

Both have tails; they are different coats. A morning coat is daywear with a front that curves away from a single button; the tailcoat is evening wear with a square cut-away front. Write the dress code on the brief so there is no confusion; the daytime coat is covered in the morning coat brief.

At the sample fitting

  1. Client stands relaxed, coat on, over waistcoat and trousers: no white below the coat front, no shirt above the trousers.

  2. Look from the side: the tails should hang straight and close, not flare.

  3. Check the tail length against the back of the knee.

  4. Client raises his arms: the waistcoat should stay down and the coat front should not ride up far.

  5. Photograph front, side and back and write the corrections in words. Review steps are on our sample policy page.

Which track fits a tailcoat?

  • MTM — from 1 piece: one client's coat, waistcoat and trousers are cut to his measurements and briefed together.

  • Bulk — from 50 per style: a formalwear line sets the three pieces and their length lines on the sealed sample, and grades them together across the size run.

The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM track is on our made to measure suit factory page.
