A traveling tailor in the US runs a business with no fitting room of its own. Clients are met in their offices, at home, in a hotel suite during a city stop. That model keeps overheads low and puts the tailor in front of busy clients — but every visit is a scheduled trip. A garment that arrives a week after the planned fitting is not a delay; it is a second flight, or a client fitted in a jacket that has not arrived.
So the core skill is planning visits around the factory's clocks. This post gives a three-visit plan, the kit that makes each visit count, and the questions to settle before the first order.
The two clocks, and what they do not include
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. For a traveling tailor, the gaps that matter are outside both windows: courier time to you, your own routing, and for production orders, freight and import. Who handles US import paperwork and duty on your shipments is confirmed on WhatsApp for your order; this page gives no duty or customs figures. Where origin marking sits on the garment is covered in country of origin marking for suits.
A three-visit plan
Visit 1 · Measure and choose: measurements, posture notes, cloth and style chosen. Afterwards send the brief on WhatsApp — measurements, cloth reference, construction, photos. Before visit 2 the sample must arrive (7–14 day window, plus courier).
Visit 2 · Sample fitting: the client tries the sample; you pin and photograph. Afterwards send the feedback photo set and written corrections. Before visit 3 the finished garment must arrive (14–21 day production window, plus freight and import).
Visit 3 · Final: the finished garment is fitted, with any local touch-ups. Afterwards add an approval note to the client's fit record.
Book visit 2 against the later end of the sample window plus courier, and visit 3 against the later end of production plus shipping. Booking against the early end is how traveling tailors end up apologising in a lobby.
Repeat clients skip a visit
Once a client's first garment is approved and their corrections are on a fit record, later orders start from a known fit. Whether a repeat order in a familiar cloth needs a new sample is agreed on the thread for each order; when it does not, visit 2 drops out of the plan. Fit records are covered in client fit records for repeat orders.
The traveling kit
Swatches you can actually supply — check availability before a trip, not after.
A try-on set of jackets in your house block, in common sizes, so clients see the cut before they choose.
A measurement sheet used the same way on every visit.
A phone tripod for the photo set: front, side and back, arms relaxed.
Order cards with the date ranges written as windows.
How shop-based tailors run the same loop at events is in the trunk-show workflow, and writing a clear English brief for a China factory in the US custom clothier brief.
Weddings and company orders on the road
A groom's party or a firm wanting matching suits is a natural traveling-tailor order. When each person is measured, MTM from 1 per person keeps fit individual. When the order is a uniform style in a size spread, bulk from 50 per style runs against one sealed sample, and the tailor's visits are for sizing and final checks rather than individual fittings.
A worked month (illustrative)
A tailor covering two cities measures four clients on a Tuesday trip and sends four briefs that evening. Samples arrive inside their window; the tailor books the return trip for the following week, fits all four, and sends corrections the same night. The final trip is booked against the later end of production plus shipping. Three trips, four clients, no garment missing at a fitting — because every visit was planned against a window, not a hope.
