Ask an older client what his first good suit was made of and he may say blue serge. The cloth has a plain, honest look, a fine diagonal you see close up and a solid colour from across the room. Tailor shops still meet it in navy suits, blazers and business suits that are worn often. They also meet its one known complaint: after a season of heavy wear, the seat and elbows can start to shine.
What is serge suit fabric?
Serge is a twill weave with an even diagonal rib, visible on both sides of the cloth. In suiting it is usually a worsted, smooth and clean-finished, though woollen serges exist. Compared with gabardine, the twill is flatter and less steep. Compared with flannel, there is no raised nap. The result is a firm, dense cloth that holds a crease, resists wrinkling and takes dark colours well, which is why navy is the classic serge colour.

Why does serge shine, and what helps?
Shine comes from the smooth twill being rubbed flat and polished: on chairs, desks and car seats, and under a hot iron. It is not a fault in the cloth; it is how smooth worsteds age. Three things help. A pressing note so the sample and the run are pressed with a cloth and never hard on the face. A second pair of trousers for a suit that will be worn several days a week.
