Quick answer: Gurkha trousers need a high rise, a wide waistband that wraps across the front and buckle tabs that close it without a belt, and each of those has to be specified because standard trouser patterns have none of them. Send a reference photo, write the rise, waistband, tab and pleat lines, and check how the waistband sits on the sample before anything is sealed. Shi Yuan (Suit Factory) takes MTM from 1 and bulk from 50 per style for overseas tailor shops, MTM boutiques and private-label brands, not retail — send the reference photo and spec lines on WhatsApp.
Buyers now ask for gurkha trousers by name, and first samples tend to go wrong in the same places. The rise is too short, so the waistband sits on the hip instead of at the waist. The buckle tabs pull the waistband into ridges. The pleats splay open because the front has too little room. They were made from a standard pattern with extras added; a good pair is drawn from the waist up.
What are gurkha trousers?
Gurkha trousers are high-waisted trousers with a wide waistband that extends across the front and fastens with one or two buckle tabs on each side instead of a belt. They usually have forward-facing pleats and a full, straight or gently tapered leg. The style takes its name from the uniform trousers associated with Gurkha regiments, and it has become a common request in warm-weather markets, Singapore among them, where a beltless high waist feels clean and cool.
The spec, line by line
Rise: high, to the natural waist or above — rise as measured, plus "high rise, waist at natural waist".
Waistband: wide, wrapping across the front — "wide waistband, extended wrap-over front", with the width on the sketch.
Tabs: one or two per side, with the buckle type — "two buckle tabs per side" or "one", and the buckle finish.
Pleats: forward pleats, one or two per side — "forward pleats, double" or "single".
Closure: an inside button and hook under the wrap — "inside button plus hook and bar".
Belt loops: none — "no belt loops".
Leg and hem: straight or gentle taper, plain hem or turn-ups — leg shape, opening and hem finish.
Where first samples go wrong
Rise too short. The waistband ends up on the hip and the look is lost. Measure the rise to where the client wants the waistband, not to his usual trousers. Rise and seat notes are in trouser rise and seat ease.
Tabs pull ridges. The tabs should close the waistband, not cinch it. Write "tabs to sit flat when fastened at the measured waist".
Pleats splay. Forward pleats need room in the front; if they open when the client stands, the hip or seat is too tight. How pleats are written is in pleated or flat front.
Waistband rolls. A wide waistband needs a firm interlining; see how waistband construction is written in curtain waistband spec.
Buckles and trims
The buckle is a visible trim: send a photo and write the metal colour, size and whether the tab end is pointed or square. Trim lock for a run is covered in button and trim lock. Whether a given buckle can be supplied is confirmed on WhatsApp.
Cloth and leg
Linen, cotton, light wool and blends all work; soft cloth drapes the pleats, firm cloth holds the waistband. A straight or gentle taper balances the high waist; the leg opening is written as in trouser leg opening. If the client has knock knees or bow legs, add the stance from trouser leg line notes.
A worked note
"Client ref A-12. Gurkha trousers, reference photo attached. High rise, waistband at natural waist, measured there. Wide wrap-over waistband. Two buckle tabs per side, brushed metal buckle. Forward double pleats. Inside button plus hook and bar. No belt loops. Gentle taper, turn-ups. Check waistband flat and pleats closed standing at sample."
At the sample
Check the waistband from the front with the tabs fastened, then ask the client to sit. The waistband should not roll and the pleats should close again when he stands. Review steps are on our sample policy page.
Which track fits gurkha trousers?
MTM — from 1 piece: a client's gurkha trousers carry the rise, waistband, tab and pleat lines on that order, as a standalone trouser order or with a jacket.
Bulk — from 50 per style: a private-label line sets the waistband width, tabs, buckle and pleats on the sealed sample and grades the waist across the size run.
The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days. The MTM track is on our made to measure suit factory page.
