No brief is complete. A custom shop sends measurements, a cloth reference and "half canvas, two buttons" — and leaves lining colour, pocket style, vent and trouser hem unsaid because they seem obvious. They are obvious to the shop. To a factory on the other side of the world, each blank is a decision someone has to make.
That decision gets made either way. The difference between a good sample and a disappointing one is often whether the factory made it silently or wrote it down and asked.
The habit to ask for
Before the sample is locked, ask the factory to send back a short list: every field it filled in because the brief did not say, with the value it intends to use. You confirm or change each line. Then the order locks and the clock starts.
That is how we ask to work: when we fill a gap, the assumption goes into the thread for you to confirm before the lock.
An example assumption list
A shop sends: measurements, navy cloth reference, half canvas, two-button single-breasted jacket, flat-front trousers. The list sent back might read:
Lapel: assumed notch, standard width — confirmed.
Vent: assumed double — changed to single.
Front pockets: assumed flap, no ticket pocket — confirmed.
Lining: assumed navy matching cloth — confirmed.
Sleeve buttons: assumed four, non-working — confirmed.
Trouser hem: assumed plain — changed to turn-up.
Trouser waistband: assumed belt loops — confirmed.
Measurement units: assumed centimetres, body measurements — confirmed.
Two of eight lines changed. Without the list, both would have arrived in the sample as surprises, and the corrected sample would have cost another 7–14 days.
Why the clock waits for the reply
Our sample clock (7–14 days) and production clock (14–21 days) start after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. An unconfirmed assumption is not locked. Starting the clock early would look faster and end slower. Production days are not delivery days either; shipping follows.
Turning assumptions into house defaults
After two or three orders, the same assumptions repeat. Turn them into a house default sheet — "our shop's standard is single vent, turn-ups, four non-working cuff buttons" — and the list gets shorter each time. The habit is the same for MTM from 1 (one client garment) and bulk from 50 per style (the sample that bulk will follow).
