Size Set Samples for a 50-Piece Suit Run: What They Check and What to Ask Your Factory

A size set sample is a small group of garments made in several sizes of an approved style — typically the smallest, the base and the largest — before bulk is cut. Its job is narrow: to show that the fit you approved in one size survives grading into the others.

For a private-label suit, grading is where good samples go wrong. A jacket can look right in a 50 and wrong in a 56: pockets too close to the side seam, a button stance that sits too high, a lapel that looks narrow on the bigger chest. None of that shows on the sealed sample.

A worked 50-piece size curve

Take a navy two-piece run of 50 pieces across six EU sizes:

  • 46: 4 pieces — smallest size, proportion check.

  • 48: 9 pieces.

  • 50: 13 pieces — base size, the sealed sample.

  • 52: 12 pieces.

  • 54: 8 pieces.

  • 56: 4 pieces — largest size, proportion check.

Total: 50 pieces, bulk from 50 per style. Eight of the fifty sit in the two end sizes, and those eight are where grading errors hide. How a run like this is built is covered in size run grading for private-label suits.

What a size check looks at

  1. Proportion: pocket position, button stance and lapel width relative to the chest in the end sizes.

  2. Length steps: jacket and sleeve length moving by consistent amounts between sizes.

  3. Trouser rise and seat in the largest size, where ease is easiest to lose.

  4. Lining and facing: enough lining length in the largest jacket; no pull at the hem.

  5. Label and size tag: the right size printed in the right garment.

What to ask your factory

Factories approach this step differently, so ask rather than assume:

  • Ask your factory whether a size set is part of the route for your style, or offered on request.

  • Ask which sizes it would cover and whether it is made in the final cloth.

  • Ask how a size check affects the start of production, and get the answer in writing.

  • If a size set is not part of the route, ask what replaces it — for example, measurement readings of the first graded pieces against your size chart.

These are the same questions we expect from buyers; we answer them per order on the thread rather than in a blog post.

Clocks and where the check sits

Sample 7–14 days; production 14–21 days, counted after size specs, cloth and construction are locked. Any size check sits before that production lock. Production days are not delivery days.

Size checks belong to the bulk track. MTM from 1 has no grading — each garment is cut to one client — so the check there is the individual fit, as described in our fit sample approval sequence.

The sealing rules are on our sample policy page; graded bulk runs are on our suit manufacturer China page. Send your size curve on WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.

FAQ

What are Shi Yuan's order tracks and clocks? Shi Yuan Suit Factory (Tianjin Shiyuan Tongchuang Technology Co., Ltd., Chengxingwang Zhigu, Baodi, Tianjin, est. 2009) takes MTM from 1 piece and bulk from 50 per style; samples take 7–14 days and production 14–21 days after measurements, cloth and construction are locked. WhatsApp +65 8013 8838.

Is a size set the same as a sealed sample? No. The sealed sample approves the fit in one size; a size check looks at how that fit grades into other sizes.

Which sizes matter most? The smallest and the largest in your run, plus the base for comparison.

Do I need a size check for a single-size reorder? Ask; if the pattern and size chart are unchanged, the earlier check may still apply.
