Bulk OEM from 50: When to Move from Sample to Production Runs

A sealed sample proves make and fit. Bulk OEM proves you can repeat it. At Shi Yuan Suit Factory, bulk OEM MOQ starts from 50 units. This piece explains when a custom shop or private-label brand should leave single-piece MTM and open a production run — without guessing lead times or inventing price tables.

MTM from 1 vs bulk from 50

Mode / MOQ / Best use

  • MTM / made-to-order: from 1 — Client suits, fit refs, soft launch

  • Bulk OEM: from 50 — Capsules, season buys, graded size runs

Many partners start with one sample suit (7–14 days after measurements + fabric confirmed), seal it, then place bulk once the store calendar needs inventory.

Signals you are ready for bulk

Move from sample to production when most of these are true:

  1. Sealed sample approved in writing — construction, trim, and fit intent locked

  2. Size plan exists — graded blocks or a clear size curve, not “we’ll see”

  3. Fabric path is clear — your cloth or mill-indent / stock discussed per order

  4. Label and packaging direction — woven label, care label, hangtag, bag

  5. Delivery window matches your season — standard production 14–21 days after confirmation

If fit still changes every call, stay on MTM singles until the seal is honest.

What the bulk window includes (and excludes)

Included in a normal 14–21 day production lead time (after confirmation):

  • Cutting and make against sealed sample / written specs

  • Agreed construction (fused / half canvas / full canvas)

  • Factory QC vs sealed sample

  • Pack-out to your packaging direction

Usually outside that window (plan separately):

  • Fabric mill-indent lead time if cloth is not on hand

  • Extra revision rounds after seal

  • Third-party inspection scheduling

  • Ocean / air transit after ex-works handoff

How we structure a first bulk order

Step A — Confirm the seal

No bulk cut against a “maybe” sample. Written approval first.

Step B — Confirm commercial scope

On WhatsApp (+65 8013 8838), we align:

  • Country and Incoterms preference

  • Quantity (from 50) and size breakdown

  • Construction

  • Fabric plan

  • Label / packaging

  • QC expectations (factory QC standard; third-party on request)

Partner pricing is quoted in writing — CMT or full make, ex-works — after scope is clear. We do not publish invented USD retail bands on this blog.

Step C — Produce and QC

Standard lead time: 14–21 days after confirmation. Factory QC against sealed sample. Your inspector welcome when arranged.

Step D — Ship

Ship to your terms. Transit risk follows the shipping terms you choose.

Private-label bulk vs MTM continuity

Private-label brands often run both:

  • Bulk from 50 for core colors / sizes

  • MTM from 1 for VIP clients or odd sizes

Shi Yuan supports that mix so you do not need a separate workshop for “specials.” More on programs: Manufacturing and private-label notes on Contact.

Mistakes that delay first bulk

  • Ordering fabric late, then blaming the factory clock

  • Changing lapel / canvas / lining after seal without a written change order

  • Skipping size curve and hoping MTM singles “average out”

  • Asking for mill names as public guarantees of perpetual stock — we discuss mill-indent or stock per order

Checklist before you WhatsApp “ready for 50+”

  • ☐ Sealed sample photo / notes on file

  • ☐ Construction named (fused / half canvas / full canvas)

  • ☐ Size breakdown draft

  • ☐ Fabric owner clear (you vs program)

  • ☐ Label artwork ready or blank-label OK for first run

  • ☐ Target ship week stated

Bottom line

Bulk from 50 is not a loyalty tax — it is the point where make becomes inventory. Seal first. Confirm fabric and sizes. Then use the 14–21 day production window as a planning number, not a slogan.

What “from 50” is designed to solve

Fifty units is low enough for a boutique capsule or a first private-label colorway, and high enough to justify graded cutting, labeled pack-out, and a serious QC pass. It is a bridge number — not a warehouse fantasy.

If your forecast is 12 suits a month of mixed sizes, stay closer to MTM from 1 until repeats appear. If your forecast is a 60-piece navy/grey core with a stable seal, bulk is the cleaner tool.

Size curve discipline (where bulk succeeds or fails)

A bulk PO without a size breakdown becomes an MTM headache wearing a bulk invoice. Before confirmation, prepare:

  • Size list (e.g. 46–56 or your market’s system)

  • Units per size

  • Short/regular/long if you sell those

  • Any blocked sizes you refuse to stock

Shi Yuan can make against graded blocks you provide or agree. What we cannot do is invent your retail size philosophy mid-cut.

Payment and confirmation hygiene (high level)

We will not publish a rigid public payment catechism on this blog, because terms are partner-specific. What you should expect in a healthy thread:

  • Written scope before money movement for sample

  • Written confirmation before bulk cut

  • Clarity on what “confirmation” means for the 14–21 day clock

Ask those questions on WhatsApp early. Ambiguity is more expensive than a clear deposit schedule.

Peak season planning

Wedding peaks, year-end parties, and spring wholesale drops all compress calendars. If you need goods ex-works in a fixed week:

  1. Seal earlier than you think

  2. Confirm fabric earlier than you think

  3. State the target week in the first bulk message

  4. Book third-party inspection slots before packing week

The production window is 14–21 days after confirmation — not after you remember the hangtags.

Bulk QC conversation starters

Use these lines with any factory, including us:

  • “QC standard is sealed sample + written measurement tolerances.”

  • “Photo report: yes/no, how many units.”

  • “Third-party inspection: our agent / named firm / not required this run.”

  • “Critical defects definition attached.”

Factory QC is baseline. Your protocol, if stricter, must be written into confirmation so time is reserved.

When not to bulk yet

  • Fit comments still contradict each other weekly

  • Construction still “TBD”

  • Label artwork still in draft with legal copy missing

  • Fabric still “maybe we’ll send”

In those cases, another MTM sample or a tighter seal review is cheaper than a 50-piece regret.

Closing

Bulk from 50 is a tool for repeating a sealed truth. Use MTM from 1 to discover that truth. Use the 14–21 day production window to schedule it. Use WhatsApp to keep decisions written.
