MTM from 1: Why Small Custom Shops Can Start with One Suit at a China Factory

Most overseas custom tailor shops assume a China suit factory will only talk once you promise hundreds of units. That assumption kills good partnerships before they start. At Shi Yuan Suit Factory, MTM / made-to-order MOQ is from 1. You can brief one suit, approve a sample, and decide later whether bulk from 50 makes sense.

This article is for custom clothiers, MTM boutiques, and private-label buyers who need a real workshop — not a retail lifestyle brand. Acumenwear is our English export site; the factory brand is Shi Yuan.

The real problem: factories that ignore low volume

Many trading desks and large OEM lines set soft floors at 100–300 suits. Small shops then bounce between:

  • Local makers who cannot scale when a client books a wedding party

  • Multiple workshops with inconsistent construction

  • “Sample free, then ghost” suppliers who disappear after deposit talk

You need a partner who will cut one MTM suit properly, write the construction down, and stay available on WhatsApp when you add volume.

What “MTM from 1” means in practice

At Shi Yuan:

  • MTM / made-to-order: from 1 piece

  • Bulk OEM: from 50 units (see our companion note on when to move to production runs)

  • Sample window: 7–14 days after measurements and fabric are confirmed

  • Production lead time: 14–21 days after confirmation (sealed sample / written OK)

“From 1” does not mean free samples or unlimited revisions. It means we will manufacture a proper made-to-measure suit for your shop’s client or for your store as a fit reference — with fee and shipping quoted before we cut. See Process for the full loop.

Who this is built for

  • Overseas custom tailor shops that take client measurements and sell under their own name

  • MTM boutiques that need a stable China make without juggling five factories

  • Private-label menswear brands soft-launching with low first orders

We are not built for walk-in C-end shoppers looking for a consumer brand, or for labels that want to sell under our name. Your label. Our workshop.

How one suit becomes a working relationship

1) WhatsApp brief

Send country, shop type, MTM vs bulk intent, rough monthly volume, and construction preference (fused / half canvas / full canvas). We aim to reply within 12 hours on business days. Contact: WhatsApp +65 8013 8838 (James).

2) Fabric and measurements

Use a mill-indent or stock program discussed per order, or send your own cloth. Share your measurement form or agreed blocks. Fit intent and revision rounds are written before sample cut — see Fabrics for construction options context.

3) Sample in 7–14 days

Clock starts only after measurements and fabric are confirmed. Sample fee and shipping are quoted on WhatsApp first.

4) Seal, then decide

Approve the sealed sample in writing. Then either:

  • Continue MTM singles as clients book, or

  • Move into bulk OEM from 50 for a capsule or season

5) QC and ship

Factory QC against the sealed sample and agreed construction. Third-party inspection (your inspector or a named agency) on request. Ship to your terms.

Why small shops win with a clear MOQ

Numbers up front reduce wasted time:

Term / Shi Yuan

  • MTM MOQ: from 1

  • Bulk OEM MOQ: from 50

  • Sample: 7–14 days after confirm

  • Production: 14–21 days after confirm

  • Construction: fused / half canvas / full canvas

Partner pricing is quoted in writing (CMT or full make, ex-works) after construction and fabric scope — not as invented retail price tags on a blog.

Common objections (and straight answers)

“Will you ignore us after one sample?” We run B2B programs for overseas clothiers. Day-to-day contact stays on WhatsApp. Client patterns and brand assets are not resold or reused; NDA on request.

“Can I send my own fabric?” Yes. Mill-indent or stock is discussed per order. We do not claim a mill “always has stock” on a public page.

“What if fit needs a second round?” Revision rounds after seal are quoted case by case. Write fit intent before the first cut so expectations match.

“Are you a trading company?” Shi Yuan is a founder-led suit factory in Baodi, Tianjin, established 2009. Workshop reality and process pages are on About and Process.

Bottom line for custom shops

You do not need a 500-unit promise to test a China factory. Brief one MTM suit. Confirm fabric and measurements. Get a sample in the stated window. Seal it. Then decide monthly rhythm.

What “from 1” does not mean

It does not mean unlimited free samples. It does not mean we will redesign your brand story. It means the commercial door is open for a single made-to-measure garment when the brief is complete.

Shops sometimes confuse low MOQ with low discipline. The opposite is true. A one-suit order still needs:

  • Complete measurements or agreed blocks

  • Fabric confirmation

  • Construction named

  • Sample fee and shipping accepted before cut

That discipline is how a small order stays profitable for both sides and how bulk later inherits a clean seal.

Operational tips for first-time China MTM buyers

  1. Pick one construction for the first sample. Do not ask for fused and full canvas “to compare” in the same coat without a written plan — you will not know what you approved.

  2. Send the measurement form as a file, not a screenshot collage. Missing fields are the top cause of silent delays.

  3. Name the decision-maker. If three partners comment on fit with different goals, write one seal owner.

  4. Plan shipping on day one. Sample sitting in a warehouse because the address was wrong still burns calendar days.

  5. Keep retail language on your side of the counter. Factory briefs should use construction names, not lifestyle slogans.

How MTM from 1 supports private-label soft launches

Private-label brands often fear that factories only care about bulk. With MTM from 1 you can:

  • Validate make before printing 50 woven labels

  • Show a physical sample to wholesale accounts

  • Train sales staff on real hand-feel

  • Decide whether half canvas is worth the band before a capsule PO

When the seal is honest, moving to bulk from 50 is a planning step — not a leap of faith.

Closing perspective for shop owners

Low MOQ without clear clocks is chaos. Clear clocks without low MOQ locks small shops out. Shi Yuan publishes both: MTM from 1, sample 7–14 after confirm, production 14–21 after confirm, bulk from 50 when you are ready. That is the offer. The next move is a complete WhatsApp brief.
