Wholesale Suits for Reselling: Building a 50-Piece Size Curve and Sending the Outliers to MTM

Most stores that buy suits to resell end up with the same problem at the end of a season: a rail of 36 Shorts and 50 Longs nobody asked for, and a waiting list for 42 Regular. The style was fine. The size curve was somebody else's.

When a store moves from buying finished stock to running its own label with a factory, the size curve becomes the store's decision. That is the part worth getting right on the first run — and it is also where a second order track helps, because no curve covers every body that walks in.

Two tracks, one rail

Our terms for resellers are the same as for any shop: bulk from 50 per style, graded across sizes you approve against a sealed sample, and MTM from 1 for a single garment cut to one client's measurements. The sample takes 7–14 days; production takes 14–21 days once size specs (or measurements), cloth and construction are locked. Production days are not delivery days — freight and customs sit after.

The practical split for a reseller: the curve covers the bodies you sell every week; MTM covers the ones you sell twice a season.

A size-curve worksheet for the first 50

Start from your own till data, not a generic chart. Count suit sales by size over the last two seasons, then turn each count into a share of 50.

Size Units sold last two seasons (example store) Share of stocked-size sales Pieces in a 50 run 38R 14 about 1 in 9 5 40R 27 about 1 in 5 11 42R 30 about 1 in 4 12 44R 21 about 1 in 6 8 40L 12 about 1 in 11 5 42L 15 about 1 in 9 6 46R 9 about 1 in 14 3 36S, 50L, 52R 6 across all three too thin to stock 0 — sent to MTM from 1

Same table as a list

  • 38R: 14 sold, about 1 in 9 of stocked-size sales → 5 pieces.

  • 40R: 27 sold, about 1 in 5 → 11 pieces.

  • 42R: 30 sold, about 1 in 4 → 12 pieces.

  • 44R: 21 sold, about 1 in 6 → 8 pieces.

  • 40L: 12 sold, about 1 in 11 → 5 pieces.

  • 42L: 15 sold, about 1 in 9 → 6 pieces.

  • 46R: 9 sold, about 1 in 14 → 3 pieces.

  • 36S, 50L, 52R: 6 sold across all three → not stocked; served one at a time through MTM from 1.

The numbers are an example store, not a recommendation: 128 units in stocked sizes, scaled to 50 and rounded to a total of 50 (5 + 11 + 12 + 8 + 5 + 6 + 3). The method is the point: sizes that sold fewer than a handful of units over two seasons do not earn rail space in a 50-piece run.

Three rules that keep the curve honest

  1. Round towards the middle. When a share does not divide neatly, give the spare piece to your best-selling size, not the edge.

  2. Do not add a size to reach 50. If the curve feels thin, deepen the sizes you already sell. A new edge size is a guess.

  3. Write the curve on the order, not in a chat. How 50 split across sizes is agreed in writing before cutting, the same way colourway splits are — see colourway split rules for bulk from 50.

Grading from the sealed sample into those sizes is covered in size run grading for bulk from 50; the short answer on how outliers and bulk share one programme is in size run plus MTM outlier sizes.

What happens to the outlier client

A customer who is a 52R walks in. The rail does not carry it, and it should not. The store measures him, picks the same cloth and construction as the stocked style, and sends one MTM order. He gets the house style in his size; the store carries no unsold 52R.

That works when the MTM order reads like the stocked style. Use the sealed bulk sample as the reference garment, and say so on the order. Our made to measure suit factory page explains the single-garment route.

Before you place the run

  • One sealed sample of the style.

  • Your size curve, written as pieces per size.

  • Cloth and construction confirmed for both tracks.

  • Label artwork for the stocked style and the MTM pieces.

Is MTM from 1 a different style? No. It is the same cloth and construction, cut to one person, using the sealed sample as the reference.

Should my first curve be wider to be safe? Usually narrower. Edge sizes are cheaper served one at a time.
